PSW1725– MENTAL HEALTH Page 3/6 Frank Farrell has recently been released from Homewood Health Centre after having been admitted recently for intense psychotic symptoms that began while he was at work at the hardware store. At the time of admission, Frank was highly agitated, yelling that the police were going to harm him because “he’s the Boston Strangler’s brother”. In the emergency room, Frank told the on- call psychiatrist that he was hearing voices of the devil preaching about his murderous relatives. This was Frank’s third hospitalization since schizophrenia was first diagnosed 12 years earlier at age 24. Frank had made an excellent recovery from previous hospital stays: He had been working as a salesperson at a hardware store for the past six years and lived nearby in a comfortable apartment. Frank had several friends in the area and was fond of playing softball with them in the park district leagues. Recuperating from this episode involved more than just dealing with the symptoms of his illness. When Frank attempted to return to his job at the hardware store, the owner told him he “was frightened by Frank’s mental breakdown.” The owner believed that mentally ill people could be violent, and worried that he might lead to another outburst in the shop. He fired Frank from his job, stating he was no longer “a good fit” for the business. After Frank was fired, he stopped going to his softball games as he worried that his friends had heard about his return of symptoms and would think he “was crazy.” He became very self-conscious and intermittently missed his follow up appointments with his psychiatrist. He became very afraid of what others would think of him and missed taking his prescription medications frequently. He also moved back home with his retired parents and became reliant on them for food, shelter, money, and support. He rarely left the house. 1. Define mental health. PSW1725– MENTAL HEALTH Page 4/6 A mental health disorder is a condition that affects a person's thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and overall mental well-being. It often disrupts their ability to function in daily life and may require treatment or support. 3. Describe three factors that influence a person’s mental health. (3 marks) 1 1) Biological factors, such as genetics or brain chemistry 2 2) Environmental factors, such as childhood trauma or ongoing stress 3 3) Social factors, such as social support or cultural beliefs and values 4. Describe three of the “Principles of Mental Health Care” that you as a personal support worker could use when supporting Frank. (3 marks) 1 1) Respect and dignity: Treating Frank with respect and dignity, acknowledging his experiences and individuality. 2 2) Empathy and understanding: Trying to understand Frank's perspective and emotions, showing empathy towards his struggles. 3 3) Support and encouragement: Providing emotional support, encouragement, and reassurance to Frank during his recovery process. 5. In your own words describe why the “principles” described in question 4 are important for the personal support worker to apply when supporting Frank? (1 mark) These principles are important for the personal support worker to apply when supporting Frank because they create a safe and supportive environment, which can contribute to his overall well-being and comfort. They help promote trust between the support worker and Frank, allowing for better communication and collaboration in his care. By applying these principles, the support worker can help reduce stigma and discrimination that Frank may face, promoting inclusivity and acceptance. 6. Review the case study and list three reasons why Frank’s family may experience stress and possibly burnout (be specific) (3 marks) 1 1) The sudden change in Frank's behavior and symptoms can be distressing for his family, who may struggle to understand and cope with his mental health disorder. 2 2) The added responsibility of providing food, shelter, money, and support to Frank can be overwhelming and exhausting for his retired parents. 3 3) The fear of stigma and discrimination that may affect their own social relationships and standing in the community can also contribute to stress and burnout for Frank's family.
PSW1725– MENTAL HEALTH Page 5/6 7. Review the case study. Describe 3 different ways stigma has affected Frank after his discharge from the hospital. (3 marks) 1 1) Frank stopped going to softball games and avoided social interactions with his friends out of fear that they would think he was "crazy". Stigma has led him to isolate himself from his support network. 2 2) Frank missed his follow-up appointments with his psychiatrist and frequently missed taking his medication due to the fear of being judged or labeled as mentally ill. 3 3) Frank's job loss and subsequent reliance on his parents for support can be attributed to stigma and discrimination against individuals with mental health disorders, as his employer believed mentally ill people could be violent and fired him based on that unfounded belief. 8. In your own words describe why stigma exists for clients with mental health disorders (1 mark) Stigma exists for clients with mental health disorders due to a lack of understanding and awareness about mental illnesses in society. Stigma is fueled by stereotypes, misconceptions, and fear, which can lead to discrimination, social exclusion, and the perception that individuals with mental health disorders are dangerous or incapable. Stigma prevents individuals from seeking help, receiving appropriate support, and fully participating in society, exacerbating the challenges they face in their mental health recovery. 9. List three members of the interprofessional team who can support Frank. Be specific as you describe the team member’s role in supporting Frank. (3 marks) a) Team Member (1.5 marks) b) Team Member’s Role (1.5 marks) a) Psychiatrist: The psychiatrist can provide medical evaluation, diagnosis, and ongoing medication management for Frank's schizophrenia. b) Psychologist: The psychologist can offer therapy, counseling, and support for Frank's mental health, helping him develop coping strategies and manage his symptoms. c) Case manager/social worker: The case manager or social worker can provide support, resources, and advocacy for Frank, helping him navigate the mental health system, connect with community supports, and address any other social or practical needs he may have. Part Two Part Two (Question 10) has several different parts/questions all of which should be answered based on the mental health disorder you choose from this list:

PSW1725– MENTAL HEALTH Page 7/6 Major Depressive Disorder can affect anyone, but certain factors can increase the risk of developing this mental health disorder. It is more common in individuals who have a family history of depression, have experienced trauma or stressful life events, have a history of substance abuse, or have certain medical conditions such as chronic pain or a thyroid disorder. Typical age of onset can vary, but it often occurs in late adolescence or early adulthood. Gender-wise, Major Depressive Disorder is more common in women compared to men. d) . Applying the principles of DIPPS, describe 4 examples of how you, a personal support worker would support a client living with this mental health disorder, specifically provide 2 ADL and 2 IADL examples ( 4 marks) Examples of how a personal support worker can support a client living with Major Depressive Disorder using the principles of DIPPS: 1) ADL Example #1: Assisting the client with personal hygiene, such as reminding them to shower, brushing their teeth, and helping them get dressed. This can help them maintain a sense of self-care and promote feelings of self-worth. 2) ADL Example #2: Encouraging the client to engage in physical activity, such as going for walks or participating in gentle exercise routines. Regular exercise has been shown to be beneficial in managing symptoms of depression and improving overall mood. 3) IADL Example #3: Assisting the client with meal planning and preparation, ensuring they have access to healthy and nourishing meals. Poor appetite and changes in eating habits are common symptoms of depression, and proper nutrition plays a vital role in overall mental well-being. 4) IADL Example #4: Providing emotional support and companionship, actively listening to the client's thoughts and feelings without judgment. Building a supportive and trusting relationship can help the client express their emotions, reduce feelings of loneliness, and promote a sense of belonging. e) In your own words , describe why the examples you chose for 10d) are important for a client living with this mental health disorder (4 marks) Importance of ADL Example #1: The examples chosen for supporting a client with Major Depressive Disorder are important because they address key aspects of daily functioning and overall well-being for individuals with this mental health disorder.
