2 The Executive Branch and The Courts The Executive Branch is the largest branch of our national government. There are three parts of the executive branch, the Executive Office of the President, the executive departments, and the independent agencies. Article II of the U.S. Constitution gives the executive branch the power to enforce laws. In turn, the president must enforce the laws of the government, but the president must be careful to not overstep authority or take over responsibilities that belong to Congress or the courts. This process is called checks and balances. The executive branch is an organization of non-elected government workers who make official decisions. In laymen terms, it means, we as citizens do not vote for the government workers. In fact, a number are appointed by the president such as federal posts and members of government agencies. B u r e a u c r a c y The executive branch is complicated, and most ordinary citizens tend to ignore it. Think about it, the word bureaucracy to us means red tape, waste, and delay, delay, delay. After all, we hear about the executive branch in disparaging terms at times. Did you know that bureaucrats used red ribbon in Britain to hold their files together, hence the term: red tape. Today this term is used to describe delays or paperwork in the bureaucracy Yet, as stated earlier, the executive branch plays an important part in our everyday lives. In fact, bureaucracies execute federal laws made by Congress and create the policies that impact us as American citizens. Here are a few examples on how bureaucracies effect our daily lives:
3 Effects of Executive Branch Can you think of some important aspect of your life that is affected by the executive branch? The executive branch of the U.S. government affects various aspects of our daily lives in numerous ways. Some of the important aspects of my life that are affected by the executive branch include security, health and safety, laws and regulations, environmental protections, social services, transportation infrastructure, consumer protection among others (Greenberg,2018). For example, I rely on the executive branch, particularly the Department of Defense and various intelligence agencies, to ensure national security. They work to protect the country from threats, both foreign and domestic, and maintain a strong military to deter potential adversaries. Secondly, I depend on federal law enforcement agencies like the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to enforce federal laws and maintain order. They investigate crimes that cross state lines and tackle issues like drug trafficking and cybercrime. Moreover, the executive branch, through agencies like the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety of the food I eat, the medications I take, and responding to public health emergencies like disease outbreaks. Additionally, I count on agencies like the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to protect the environment and regulate activities that can harm our air, water, and land. They set standards to ensure clean air and water and work to combat climate change. Moreover, the executive branch administers important social programs like Social Security and Medicare, which provide financial support and healthcare services to eligible citizens, including me when I reach retirement age. When it comes to transportation

4 infrastructure, the executive branch oversees transportation infrastructure and safety through agencies such as the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). They ensure the safety of air travel, highways, and public transit systems. Most importantly, Agencies like the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) protect consumers like me from fraudulent business practices and promote fair competition in the marketplace. Various executive branch agencies create and enforce regulations that impact industries and businesses. These regulations can affect the products and services I use and consume daily, from the safety of my car to the quality of the air I breathe. In summary, the executive branch, through its various agencies and departments, affects the various aspects of my daily lives in different ways. Some of the important aspects of my life that are affected by the executive branch include having mail delivered to my house, my Social Security benefits, police protection, paying income taxes, going to school, breathing clean air and eating non-contaminated food, driving my vehicle
