Report
Great job on this week’s post. Lead poisoning is one of the longest standing child public health epidemics in the United States history. Although lead poisoning is often associated with socioeconomic inequity and perpetuates health inequality, children within the testing age should be tested regardless if they are within the recommendation guidelines or not. Lead is a potent neurotoxin as you have mentioned and that there is no level of lead exposure that is considered “safe” for children (Sobin, et al., 2023). Elevated blood lead level among children is associated with serious, often irreversible, health consequences such as IQ deficits, poor growth, and cognitive deficits. As per US Preventative Services Task Force and CDC, pregnant women should be tested for lead, and then continuous screening of children after birth is recommended (Cantor, Hendrickson, & Blazina, 2019).
