Imagine that you work as a therapist in a mental health counseling clinic regulated by your
state. A 16-year-old transgender individual (female transitioning to male) presents for services,
but only seeks your signature to move forward with hormone therapy and breast removal.
What are some of the challenges you might face as the therapist? What physiological and
environmental factors should be considered? Would you sign the document in this situation?
Explain your rationale.
For this case of a 16 year old that is seeking a signature from me for them to receive hormone
treatment and breast removal, I would have to have to denied this to the client. In the state of
Mississippi it would be illegal for me to sign off on this as state law enacted in 2023 ban any
person from knowingly providing or engaging in conduct that aids and abets the performance
of gender transition procedures on a minor
(
SB2728 (as Introduced) - 2022 Regular Session
,
n.d.).Because of this, it would be illegal and unethical for me to sign the paperwork for the
client. As the counselor, it would be important for me to explain these to the client and explain
that I must follow the state laws and regulations. However, if my state were to ever allow this I
would feel the need to work more with the client before signing the paperwork. I would want
the client to actively participate in exploration of the client decisions and how they would
handle the possible outcomes. I would also seek supervision and guidance from supervisors to
determine the best curse of action in this case. The client could be any factor with their school,
home life, and religious beliefs as a result of the therapy and surgery and it would be my job to
ensure that the client understand and is aware of these things. Throughout working with this
client I would make sure to respect the client while still helping them to acknowledge and
become aware of all possible effects good or bad that they may encounter.
