1.Brief description of your strategy -- what was your strategy going into this negotiation
after you read your role?
This task was completed in collaboration with my colleague Dellis Jones. We scheduled a Zoom
meeting for Thursday, 11/09. I was Dr. Smith, and she was Dr. Green. I already had my checklist
for the conversation written out and ready for this task. That was the first thing I did well; I
arrived prepared, unlike the last time when I had nothing. My strategy was based on the approach
of interest and my goal was for us to accept NO deal. We must win no matter what because we
only have one chance.
2.What happened during the process and what was the outcome?
I began by asking the questions on my checklist, some of which required follow-ups. As a
member of a scientific team, I am negotiating with another group of scientists because my group
has discovered an AIDS cure. The second group likewise believes they have discovered a cancer
cure. Both treatments include nuts. There are only 3,000 nuts left and no longer able to produce
more. So, both teams just have one chance. It was really challenging because their goal was the
same as ours. But we know for certain that ours is a sure cure for AIDS. The relationship with the
other scientific team was not good. We don't trust them, and there's no way to confirm they're
telling the truth. We discovered a cure and want to be the ones who show it. They claim to be the
same as ours. There are no other options. There are only 2,000 nuts for one team. Respectfully, it
turned into a back-and-forth discussion with no resolution in hand.
3.What do you think you did well and why?
I think I did well because I had a positive mental attitude before the discussion began. I gave
myself a boost of confidence before starting the process. I wanted to make certain that my
behavior was positive. This role play was traumatic for me since a friend of mine died of AIDS a
long time ago after contracting a blood infection during one of the worst years of the AIDS
pandemic. Doctors tried a variety of drugs and therapy to see if AIDS might be cured but
unfortunately it didn't work out. All I could think of was my friend and a possible AIDS cure that
could have saved her.
4. Where could you improve and why? Did you make mistakes in hindsight?
In my mind, I took this responsibility seriously. After 5 years of study, I was one of the scientists
that developed an AIDS treatment. I was hesitant to give up without fighting for it. I'm not sure
whether I did this appropriately, but I think I failed to emphasize the importance of this type of
treatment sufficiently. I believed we were all scientists who knew what we were doing. I focused
on the fact that my group has been working on finding a cure for nearly 5 years. I asked about
their cure, how much testing was done, and how trustworthy it was. They declined to respond
because they believed it was a private matter. I could have improved and done better if I had kept
my emotions in control. As I've indicated before, when I'm enthusiastic about something, it
reflects in my emotions. I allowed that to get the best of me, and I believe it carried a negative
vibe throughout the negotiation process.
5.What did you learn from this simulation?
These role plays help me improve my skills while also identifying my strengths as well as my
weaknesses. I never imagined that these drills would inspire me so much and give me the tools I
need for a successful negotiation. I'm excited to perform this role play again. I wouldn't say it
was an unsuccessful negotiation, but neither party was able to reach an agreement. Both parties
want the same thing, and they were passionate about their entitlement to an AIDS/cancer cure.
Collaboration on the cure was not an option. Because this is such a significant discovery for not
just the group of discoveries, but for the entire world and how many lives this medicine can save,
I feel the only choice was to include a third party.
