In many states, marijuana is now legal for certain medical purposes. Identify some clinical
issues that may now present themselves because of legalization. What prevention efforts are
important to help individuals prevent developing a cannabis use disorder? What if you have a
client who is addicted to alcohol and narcotics, who is also using marijuana to help with
chronic pain? How might you address this situation? How does the Flexibility disposition
(GCU Counselor Dispositions) connect to the use of cannabis by a client that has SUD
issues? Discuss the importance of applying crisis management skills and collaboration with
other professionals.
There has been a dramatic growth in medical marijuana use in America for recreational and
medical benefits in the past few years. Some clinical issues that may now present
themselves because of legalization are that more people may feel comfortable using
marijuana for recreation and develop an addiction that could cause them to have mental
health issues. People may use marijuana for medical purposes without consulting a doctor
and may not get the proper dosage. There is no sure way to prevent someone from
developing a cannabis use disorder, as it is a complex condition with many potential causes.
One key prevention effort is to educate people about the risks of cannabis use, especially
early and frequent use. It is important for people to be aware of the potential consequences
of using cannabis, so that they can make informed decisions about whether or not to use it
even though it is legal.
