Define the three models of service delivery The Medical Model, Public Health
Model and Human Service Model; and describe the overlap and differences
between the three:
The Human Service Model helps clients by
identifying strengths, teaching clients problem-solving skills, and
improving overall quality of life. The Public Health Model helps
clients by trying to emphasize prevention and educating
populations about specific problems and is more aimed at
populations, rather than individuals. The Medical Model helps
clients by providing a diagnosis and then a treatment
or cure.
Describe the history of each service model:
1.
The Medical Model began
with the field of psychiatry in the 18
th
century. Philippe Pinel
emphasized the belief that pathological behavioral disorders had
organic origins and their treatment belonged to medicine.
Psychiatric drugs are now among the most widely used treatments
for mental disorders. 2. Early laws in the US such as Massachusetts
Poor Law of 1692, gave local authorities the power to remove and
isolate the afflicted. A report by Lemuel Shattuck in 1850, inspired
both a sanitary awakening and social reform that constituted public
health at that time. Today, the Pu8blic Health Service is part of the
Department of Health and Human Services and focuses on
interventions aimed at disease prevention and health promotion
that shape a community’s overall profile. 3. The philosophy of
human services was solidified during the 1940’s. It included the
belief that people have the right to expect their society, through its
technology and other resources, to prevent their deprivation and
provide for their basic human needs. They also believed that the
society, through its government, has the irrevocable responsibility
for providing people with adequate human services.
Describe how the three models of service delivery are used today in human
service delivery:
Describe how the three models are utilized in a human service case scenario:
In a bullying scenario
1. The Medical Model could have the child being
bullied be seen by a psychiatrist and get prescribed medications
because the child is now suffering from depression. 2. The Public
Health Model could go to the place of the problem like maybe the
school and assess how they can work with the school to prevent the
issue from arising again. 3. The Human Service Model could focus on
the person doing the bullying and identifying why it is that person
feels the need to bully.
Describe how NAMI can be useful to clients (and human service workers!):
Be familiar with the prevalence of Mental Health issues in the US as
described by the NAMI fact sheet:
43.8 million adults experience mental
illness in a given year. One-half of all chronic mental illness begins by the
age of 14; three-quarters by the age of 24. Approximately 10.2 million
adults have co-occurring
mental health and
addiction disorders.
Depression is the leading cause of disability worldwide, and is a major
contributor to the global burden of disease. Nearly 60% of adults with a
mental illness didn’t receive mental health services in the previous year.
