Identify and discuss the pros and cons of one federal health or mental health policy . What political , cultural , or economic factors have influenced the development and implementation of the policy ? Describe the American with Disabilities Act of 1990 ( ADA ) and explain the impact of this piece of legislation in providing civil rights protections for people with disabilities . Discuss the differences between drug treatment and drug enforcement . Which is preferable for dealing with substance abuse ? Why ? The Affordable Care Act (ACA) is the healthcare policy that was put into place by then-President Barack Obama in March of 2010, it is also known as Obamacare. "The law expanded Medicaid eligibility, created health insurance exchanges, mandated that Americans purchase or otherwise obtain health insurance, and prohibited insurance companies from denying coverage due to preexisting conditions" (Kenton et al., 2022). The development of this system was influenced by economic factors, including the rise in healthcare costs. "In addition, the ACA is helping to improve the quality and efficiency of care for all Americans, contributing to better health outcomes while reducing costs" (Furman, 2014). Pros of the Affordable Care Act Expands healthcare availability to more citizens. Prevents insurers from making unreasonable rate increases. Individuals with preexisting health conditions cannot be denied. Coverage for additional screenings, immunizations, and preventive care. (Kenton, et al., 2022) Cons of the Affordable Care Act Those already insured saw an increase in premiums. Taxes were created to help supplement the ACA, including taxes on medical equipment and pharmaceutical sales. The enrollment period is limited for new enrollees. Many businesses curtailed employee hours to avoid providing medical insurance. (Kenton, et al., 2022) Americans with Disabilities Act The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was created to help individuals who have disabilities not be discriminated against when it comes to finding jobs and housing. People who have disabilities should be treated with the same respect as those without disabilities. “The ADA is a civil rights law that prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in all areas of
public life, including jobs, schools, transportation, and all public and private places that are open to the general public" (ADA,2017). Drug Treatment vs. Drug Enforcement When someone needs help with drug treatment, they are admitted to treatment centers. People who are sent to treatment facilities typically come out successfully. Individuals are taken to drug treatment centers to receive help with their substance addictions, get clean, and start over in life. Drug enforcement refers to individuals who are taken into custody by law enforcement and either taken to jail or prison. Individuals who are taken into custody usually stay in jail or prison for some time. When they get released, they either end up with or without probation. They frequently return to the location where they were first apprehended, and the cycle simply continues. Drug treatment is the method of choice for treating substance abuse. It is more effective between drug treatment and drug enforcement, this is preferred. Reference: ADA. (2017). An overview of the Americans with disabilities act.
