The social problem that will investigated through the research study in this paper is
sexual violence in women. Sexual assault in women has been around for many years; health
disparities such as low-income communities, socioeconomic status, gender inequity, and lack of
understanding and resources all play a role in why this public health issue is still prevalent.
Globally, it is estimated that 736 million women, almost one in three—have been subjected to
physical and sexual intimate partner violence (Kalra & Bhugra, 2013).
According to the Royal Women’s Hospital (2021), people are still having a
misunderstanding of what sexual assault is. There have been many women who communicate
about their experiences of sexual assault. However, because many of them get ignored, or many
believe the women are lying, it is difficult for them to receive the support that they need. Some
men have stated that the women are the ones that provoke them into committing the assault; this
is either by the types of clothing they wear, flirting with them, or simply walking alone.
(WCSAP, 2022). The public health issue of sexual violence has increased tremendously during
COVID-19. During the lockdown, the percentage of women who were getting assaulted went up
to 23 percent compared to 17 percent in 2017 (Majeed-Ariss et al., 2023). When men lost their
jobs during the pandemic, it caused them to be depressed and angry, and most of the time, they
took the anger out on their wives or girlfriends, which resulted in them forcefully getting
intercourse by their partners and even beating them if the women resit (Majeed-Ariss, 2022). The
pandemic has made it harder for women to get help because it is easy for the perpetrators to keep
track of them by checking the victims’ electronic devices, causing them to be in danger if they
tried to escape and find help, making the number of victims higher and the public health issue
more challenging to mitigate (Majeed-Ariss, 2022).
The research will fill a gap in the literature because it is a controversial public health
issue still prevalent in Society. It will help the audience explore specific gaps, such as gender
inequality and lack of education, which are huge in why the numbers keep increasing. There is a
stigma when it comes to sexual violence because many men believe that women are seen for
attention based on what they wear, the way they talk to them, or where they choose to hang out.
(For example, the club, walking alone, or being at a bar) Majeed-Ariss (2022). The unique factor
about my study is that I tend to do intensive research on the reason why this situation is still in
society by not just focusing on the perpetrators but incorporating the victim's feelings and trying
to view it from their point of view; by doing this, we will see that there needs to be more work
being done with educating the population about the issue so the women do not feel alone.
