The purpose of this mixed methods study is to focus on the public health issue of sexual
assault against women and examine how the number of women who are getting assaulted
increased during the lockdown for COVID-19 in the United States.
The appropriate research design for the research problem of sexual assault in women is
mixed methods. According to the scholarly article
Advancing The Study Of Violence Against
Women Using Mixed Methods: Integrating Qualitative Methods Into A Quantitative Research
Program
Testa et al., 2021, stated that
mixed methods are appropriate for this study because
combining quantitative with qualitative data methods offers better ways to help mitigate sexual
violence. Although the appropriate research design for this study is mixed methods, individually,
both qualitative and quantitative work great as well because it fills a gap and helps better
understand the issue
(Testa et al., 2021).
The quantitative studies have been beneficial because
they “identified predictors and mechanisms underlying violence and its subtypes and supported
theoretically derived hypotheses”
(Testa et al., 2021).
In comparison, qualitative research
provides essential information about the population's experience with violence and creates a
better understanding of the issue.
However, mixed methods are most appropriate for this study because researchers are
studying the physical, sexual, and emotional violence against women. Tbe issue Violence against
women is a complex, multi-faceted phenomenon occurring within a social context that is
influenced by health disparities such as gender norms, interpersonal relationships, socioeconomic
status, and low-income communities (Mosely, 2021)
The social problem and the purpose problem both intertwine when it comes to the public
health issue of sexual assault against women. In order to know and understand the purpose of an
issue, the social problem has to be clear and well-stated. This will help researchers find better
results and develop excellent methods/interventions.
