1.
What are the three main components of a fully developed electronic health record (EHR)
according to the Institute of Medicine?
2.
Discuss at least four benefits of adopting an EHR system for the provider?
3.
What are at least three barriers to EHR implementation?
1.
EHRs are used to compile information and more comprehensive medical data outside of
just the office the patient is currently in which makes it helpful for patients who see
multiple physicians. This makes it easy to be able to be shared with different specialists,
hospitals and nursing homes. It also makes it easier to share the data with authorized
users throughout different healthcare systems. An example of this would be a patient
seeing a doctor at St. Luke’s and the University of Kansas Healthcare system.
2.
Some benefits of using an EHR system would be that the operational efficiency would
improve, information will always be legible, providers will have quick and easy access to
the patients’ medical record to make sure they are receiving care that they need and are
beneficial to them, and it allows the medical records to be shared with other physicians
and the patient as well.
3.
Some barriers that could be in place of medical offices being have to adopt EHRs would
be cost; the average cost of getting this put into a medical office is $55K, there would
have to be time to be able to train all of the staff to be able to use this in the correct way,
and it would completely change the workflow of an office when going from paper
documenting and charting to electronic documentation and charting.
