OPIOID PREVENTION PROGRAM FOR ADOLESCENTS Anthony Lombardi
HISTORY OF OPIOIDS Opioids have been used in the U.S. since the 1860s during the Civil War. The 1800s opioid crisis was coming to an end in the 1900s but then their use began again close to the year 2000. Opioid use and medical prescriptions for them have grown drastically since the years leading up to 2000. In 2014 the CDC declared that opioid overdose prevention is among its top 5 public health challenges. This Photo by Unknown Author is licensed under CC BY-SA-NC
OPIOID ADDICTION AND THE ADOLESCENT POPULATION Adolescents are developmentally wired to pursue highly stimulating activities. The underdeveloped pre-frontal cortex of adolescents can cause poor decision-making. Over 695,000 people aged 12-17 misused prescription opioids in the past year in 2018. Out of 2,231 adolescent overdoses between July 2019 and December 2021, 91.3% of them included at least one opioid. This Photo by Unknown Author is licensed under CC BY-SA-NC
