The Affordable Health Care Act Politics have been a part of health care since the beginning of its inception. This has been both positive and negative. Often a hot health care topic is used to gain votes, but then follow through does not happen or policies get broken down into less effective models. An example of a hot topic item is the Affordable Health Care Act (ACA). The Affordable Health Care Act was first proposed in 2009, become law until March 2010 and has undergone 506 amendments (Digital Communications Division, 2023). President Obama took great interest in the ACA to bring affordable health care to everyone. The ACA was not intended to stop at the version that was signed into law in 2010 but was to be adapted over time and be improved upon (Obama Foundation, 2023). Benefits of ACA are that it helped over 40 million to access health coverage and helped 133 million from losing their coverage (Obama Foundation, 2023). Since the ACA was signed, many politicians have tried to repeal the ACA. President Trump fought hard to repeal the ACA and in turn this has led Medicaid funding cuts (The White House, 2023). President Biden has been fighting to fix the ACA and views health care as a “right and not a privilege” and has endorsed changes that has led to reduce premium costs by implementation of the American Rescue Plan (The White House, 2022). I think there are positives to each of the efforts regarding the ACA. I think changes are needed to Medicaid coverage to help reduce misuse of it and ensure it is truly utilized by those who need it. I am absolutely in support of making insurance affordable and accessible by all. I disagree with the original ACA that mandated all to have health care insurance. Instead, it should be something any person can obtain and to easily afford it. By making health care coverage affordable for all it will ultimately lead to decreased health care costs. Costs are driven up by under or uninsured parties due to decreased payment for services which leads providers to raise costs to balance the budget (Tolbert et al., 2022). If I was able to influence the political stance on the ACA, I would revise the current ACA to ensure that all people have access to affordable coverage and health care. I would also ensure that health care providers are held accountable for not price gauging and are only billing for services rendered. I would also ensure education on challenges in health care that the past changes have created by decreased funding or eliminated funding such as mental health.
