1 Module 5: Reflection Activity Brianda Jimenez Arizona State University MED 300: Hist Contemp Issues in Health Dr. Neda Tavassoli November 12, 2023
2 There are multiple things in this module that helped me put things into perspective when it comes to healthcare and the way people are treated. Learning about the fundamental obligations and seeing the Patch Adams movie clip helped me understand that many other things go into the care of patients as well as about the healthcare system. These will help me in the future working as a healthcare provider in more ways than one. To start, the Patch Adams movie clip gives perspective on the levels there are for caring for a patient. There is much more depth to a person’s overall health. Healthcare providers tend to just give medication and go, this does help with getting rid of the actual disease, but many times the mental health of a person is still affected by their illness even though it’s gone or even just controlled. It shows the importance of how much a positive environment can help with the overall health of people. The scene talks about how everyone on the ranch is not only a patient but also a doctor, the approach used at the ranch is more of a holistic approach which includes empathy, compassion, community, connection, and even laughter (Patch Adams). This shows the importance of a more humane healthcare system and a patient-centered model. Although the medicine itself is important to the treatment of an illness, mental and spiritual well-being is just as important to the recovery after the fact, as well as will massively improve the quality of life as a whole of a person (Patch Adams). It also sheds light on advocating for patient-provider trust and connection as well as a patient’s right to have a say in their healthcare decisions, which connects to my next point.(7 fundamental obligations) The 7 fundamental obligations are extremely important, especially for people who want a future in healthcare. As I previously mentioned, patient-provider trust and respect are exercised by the first fundamental right which is respecting the rights of the patients (7 fundamental obligations). There are clashing perspectives when it comes to healthcare which are patients respecting clinicians' judgement and providers respecting patients’ decisions. Although they might clash sometimes, coming to a conclusion in which all parties involved feel comfortable is the best way to go. These things are important for me personally to know in my professional life
3 since when working in a healthcare setting, they are all very common issues and things that I will experience in my day-to-day life as a healthcare provider. To conclude, these two materials in the class spoke the most to me since they helped me understand the importance of not only the physical well-being of a patient but also the respect and rights of the patient (7 fundamental obligations) as well as the importance of mental and spiritual well-being of patients and how important compassion and empathy is in their treatment. (Patch Adams) I would like to know more about the difference when being cared for not only in medicinal and holistic care but strictly in medicinal care. I would like to know if there's a difference in how fast their recovery as well as their overall experience.
