Skills Exercise 1: Evaluating Sources Directions: Fill out the following worksheet. You may need to log in to the URI Libraries using your URI credentials if you are completing this assignment from off campus. Learn more here. Scenario: You are working on a research project on cancer treatments for a course this semester. Your professor has told you to use quality information sources that have been published within the last ten years. Follow the additional guidelines below in Parts 1-3 to select the most appropriate book, article, and website from each pair of options. Justify each selection in a brief paragraph that points to specific evidence for your decisions (~100 words). To pass this assignment, you must: Identify the best sources for the scenario in all three sections. For each of the three sections, compose a paragraph of at least 85 words that includes a minimum of 3 criteria that justify your choice (using the CRAAP test for Parts 1 & 3 and Identifying Scholarly/Professional Articles for Part 2). PART 1: BOOKS You need to identify one book that will provide you with an overview of current developments in cancer research and treatments. Use the information provided below to identify which book meets the requirements established above in the scenario. Option A: Title: Cancer Treatment Author: Charles M. Haskell & Jonathan S Berek (Both MDs) Date of publication: 1995 Subject/Topic: Treatment of Cancers General description of type of content: This book covers the treatments and therapies in use for different variations of cancer. Content in the book was provided by multiple contributors, all doctors. The book is divided into two main parts consisting of multiple sections/chapters. The main parts deal with general information and topics related to cancer and the second part deals with treatments of specific types of cancer. References are provided. Option B: Title: Advances in Cancer Research Author: Kenneth D. Tew & Paul B. Fisher (Both MDs) Date of Publication: 2015 Subject/Topic: Cancer Research Information General description of type of content: This book is comprised of chapters reporting on various topics related to cancer research including information on current treatments and therapies for various types of cancers. Each chapter is authored by researchers in the field and includes references/bibliographies of
sources. 1. Which source is the better source? Option b is the better source for this scenario. 2. Why do you think this is the better source? Justify your answer in a short paragraph (~100 words) by using the CRAAP test criteria. The currency for option B is better. I need to find research on current developments in cancer, so having a book published in 2015 is better than the one published in 1995. This book is relevant to the situation because it provides information on real world examples via case studies and extensive explanations regarding dyslexia. It is written by Kenneth D. Tew & Paul B. Fisher who both have their M.D.s(Doctor of Medicine degrees). This makes them more of an authority in this field. “Advances In Cancer Research” is authored by researchers in the field and includes references and bibliographies of sources. Book two also gives the reader a deeper understanding of the advancements in cancer research while book one gives information on cancer treatments. How confident do you feel about your answer to Part 1? *Highlight which response you identify with the most strongly. Confident Somewhat confident Not confident PART 2: ARTICLE SOURCES Your project requires you to use one scholarly article in your project. Which article meets this requirement? Option A: Recent Progress of Nanotechnology-Based Theranostic Systems in Cancer Treatments http://uri.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx? direct=true&db=a9h&AN=150976345&site=ehost-live&scope=site Option B: An Evolution in Cancer Treatment http://uri.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx? direct=true&db=a9h&AN=142061507&site=ehost-live&scope=site 1. Which source is the scholarly article? Option 1 is the scholarly article 2. How do you know this is a scholarly article? Justify your answer in a short paragraph (~100
words) using Identifying Scholarly/Professional Articles . There are three reasons why I think Option one: Recent Progress of Nanotechnology- Based Theranostic System in Cancer Treatments is the scholarly article out of the two options, my reasonings are due to: the author affiliation, the source of the articles and the fact that it was peer reviewed. By looking at the author affiliation of each option, I can tell that option one is the scholarly article. The authors are affiliated with the National Engineering Research Center for Nanomedicine, College of Life Science and Technology and the Huazhong University of Science and Technology. This makes them a reliable authority on the subject of Cancer. Option A was peer reviewed, meaning the information they release if looked at and reviewed by the people who are professional in the field. The accuracy of the article is also better. Their source is an academic journal by the Tianjin Medical University Cancer Institute & Hospita. How confident do you feel about your answer to Part 2? *Highlight which response you identify with the most strongly. Confident Somewhat confident Not confident PART 3: WEBSITES You can use one website on this assignment. Which of these two sources passes the CRAAP test and would be appropriate for college-level research? Option A: http://www.cancer.gov/ Option B: http://cancer.mercola.com/ 1. Which source is the better source for the scenario? Option b is the better source for this scenario. 2. Why do you think this is the better source? Justify your answer in a short paragraph (~100 words) by using the CRAAP test criteria. I analyzed options A and B, and after that I concluded that option A is the better source of information. It is relevant to a college level research because it provides a plethora of research on cancer including how it is caused, treatment and the types of cancer. The website's accuracy is excellent because of those same reasons. The website states facts and supports it with reasearch. The purpose of this website is the government's way to share accurate information about cancer on the National Cancer Institute(NCI) page. NIC is an institute focused on learning about cancer. Along with the information it provides, it includes supported research and

NCI’s grants and training programs. The url of the website ends in “.gov” meaning it is a website owned and operated by the government. The information given is unbiased and free of emotion.
