1) What role did the Quinlans' faith have in their decision making to do "everything" for their daughter initially and then to decide to take her off life support eventually? We agreed that religion played a big role in deciding how they dealt with Karen’s end of life care decisions. This took an especially important turn when they got their pastor, Thomas Trapasso involved. The family initially stuck with the idea that they had to do everything to keep her alive, as they understood the value of life in their faith, but as time went on and they understood where the case stood, the use of life support to keep someone alive didn’t involve any moral obligation (according to their pastor), so as they had this newer perspective, they decided to eventually take her off life support. 2) What do you think about the concept of ''Judicious neglect'' as it relates to medical care? Judicious neglect refers to the doctor’s involvement with private pleas taken for patients who are on end of life support. In Quinlan’s case, the supreme court stated the family had the right of privacy over her life, which could exceed what the state’s interest is in preserving her life. We as a group think this concept is one that depends case by case, because everyone deals with different morals and values, and how they tackle it, so going against the needs and desires of the family, and what the situation demands. 3) How do you think today's advancements in medical technology that are used to prolong life on the growing aging population might affect end of life policy in the future? As we start to get medically advanced, we will continue to have more people having their lives extended (and at certain costs), so it would likely make policy more tricky. Also, with medical advancements, there will also likely be more access to medical equipment,
which means it will likely affect more people, meaning it must be addressed. Additionally, it will make case-by-cases an analyses of issues slightly more tricky, as they will apply to more people, involving different avenues for how we approach things.
