Evening, friends! I hope everybody is having a lovely night and holiday (for those that celebrate). Keep
clear of highway travel insanity, too, if possible. Ha!
I went down quite the rabbit hole of research reading through journals/articles/videos, ect to use for this
discussion! The article I finally decided to go with is "Earth beyond six of nine planetary boundaries"
(Richardson et al., 2023). Essentially, this paper analyzes the combined individual factors and processes
that drive Earth system biosphere functions, then combines them to create a more comprehensive
perspective. In Western human and veterinary medicine systems doctors and practitioners generally
treat one body system, symptom, issue at a time. Osteopathic medicine, on the other hand, addresses
the entire body/working system to best alleviate, heal, plan, treat, and so on. The planetary boundaries
framework discussed in the article is a solid analogy to the "full-spectrum" approach in dealing with
climate change issues. This framework draws from Earth systems science to identify nine critical
processes that are necessary to maintain stability and resilience on earth. Environmental functions and
life sustaining systems on earth have remained mostly stable over the past ~10,000 years. After the last
ice age, the planet entered a warming period; the Holocene. The Holocene brought with it the rise of
civilization and relatively stable, warm global climate and conditions. Human perturbation has since
brought the previously predictable climatic patterns to a state of a future unknown. Addressing
anthropogenic effects on the global environment individually is common (i.e. pollution, biodiversity loss,
deforestation). As the article points out, however, this approach doesn't address the interrelated effects
and interactions that affect the overall state of global climate health. Below I am going to include a
graphic pulled from the article which demonstrates the six boundaries which have already been
transgressed out of the nine total planetary boundaries. You can see that ocean acidification is close to
approaching it's planetary bound, and if it crosses that point (7/9 boundaries transgressed) the overall
health and life-sustaining conditions on Earth are beyond any known conditions, and could potentially
lead to life-ending event/s.
Overall, the scientific updates and analyses that have been presented are very clear indicators that
biosphere-related planetary boundary processes that provide the capacity to dampen disturbance of
safe earth systems are at, or close to, a high-risk level of transgression.
