Assignment: Annotated Bibliography Effects of Health Literacy and Diabetes Prevention in Burmese Immigrants RSCH - 8110R Dr. Ji Shen May 5, 2018
Assignment: Annotated Bibliography Effects of Health Literacy and Diabetes Prevention in Burmese Immigrants I firmly believe that when one can understand the reason behind on the disease of diabetes can prevent it deadly poisons before it need to be cure. Understanding a disease may not require a doctor in medicine degree, but it is a necessity for the public to be able to understand the medical health literacy. The interest of diabetes prevention arises on both side of my family have the disease and the risks factor of me developing diabetes rise as I reached 30 years old last two years ago. As I study more about diabetes and its caused, I realized that one need the health literacy to fully understand the depth of the disease and it prevention. I am interested in diabetes prevention intervention on the low health literacy effects in low-income Burmese immigrants’ community residing in Baltimore, Maryland. According to the United States Department of Health and Human Services (n.d), the health literacy risk factors are most likely in an older individual, racial and ethnic minorities population with lower than a high school diploma and low-income levels population with non-native English speakers. Annotation of Quantitative Research Articles Annotated Bibliography Marchante, A. N., Pulgaron, E. R., Daigre, A., Patiño-Fernandez, A. M., Sanchez, J., Sanders, L. M., & Delamater, A. M. (2014). Measurement of Parental Self-Efficacy for Diabetes Management in Young Children. Children's Health Care, 43(2), 110-119. doi:10.1080/02739615.2014.849957 The aspiration of researchers in this article is the measurement of self-efficacy for diabetes management of parental to young children, and it is believed that self-efficacy is vital to 2
constructs in diabetes management. The hypothesis of the study is the parental higher self- efficacy on PSESDM would be associated with the sophisticated glycemic control. Researchers oversaw the used measure of adaptation of the PDSMS and reported the previous finding on the validity and reliability of diverse parents’ sample. Scholars found that the associations of the higher score on PSESDM of to an advanced quality of life in children and better in glycemic control. Researchers well framed on the question of the study measurement in parental self- efficacy for diabetes management for diabetes. Scholars related their research questions using the descriptive analyses conduction to regulate the low self-report parental self-efficacy and the related diabetes quality of life. Researchers used Pearson correlations in scrutinizing the association within the self-efficacy and the duration of diabetes with demographic variables with the age of a child. In the relationship between children’s gender and parental self-efficacy, the birth country of the parent, marital status, and education reviewing, researchers used the sample t-test. This study shows the critical of using methods of sample t-test and Pearson to see the correlations of the proposed questions. My area of interest study focus is similar to this article; however, I am more interested in studying how the culturally-based diabetes prevention education and diabetes knowledge in low health literacy Burmese immigrants in the United States. So, I think this would be able to apply the sample t-test using the Statistical Package for the Social Science (SPSS) and Pearson correlation. Wang Hong, X., Rothman, R. comprehensive health literacy strategy: study protocol of a cluster randomized controlled trial. Trials, 15(1), 394-411. doi:10.1186/1745-6215-15-498 This article aims to help to demonstrate the benefits of addressing health literacy and health communication to upgrade self-management and outcome of the diabetes patients in China. The topic of the sources of this article is the limited health literacy in diabetes self- management involvements of numerous diabetes patients in China which have led to the disadvantage of clinical outcomes. Authors act designed to examine the cost efficacy and cost- effectiveness of relaying health literacy to improve the skills and glycemic control in self- management. Researchers used the methods of cluster randomized controlled trial (RCT) conduction in 20 healthcare communities’ sites of Shanghai, China. The research methods used in this study was appropriate with sufficient sample size of 800 diabetes patients randomized into intervention using revision Chinese versions of health literacy management scale and diabetes numeracy test scale. The t-test was used in the comparison of the participants’ literacy status, and the multivariable general linear model was used to adjust the value baseline covariance of age, sex, and the date of diagnosis. Researchers stated the strengths of their study was the data collection naturalistic setting in the age of the patients’ involvement and their hypotheses examination. In contrasts, researchers also talk about the possible limitation of their study was a little one-year intervention which they think may not be long enough to detect the effect of the intervention on the complications of diabetes. This article is different than others in the same field of diabetes prevention in the specific focus of the relationship between health literacy. This study informed me that my future research is plausible as I was concerned about the effectiveness of health literacy in the prevention of 4
diabetes. The article did fill the gap in the literature, and I believe that this article is universal which may also help me choosing in the methods study of my interest project. Annotation of Qualitative Research Articles Annotated Bibliography Mishuris, R. G., Yoder, J., Wilson, D., & Mann, D. (2016). Integrating data from an online diabetes prevention program into an electronic health record and clinical workflow, a design phase usability study. BMC Medical Informatics And Decision Making, 1688. doi:10.1186/s12911-016-0328-x This study aims to portray the options of providers concerning the consolidation of externally generated lifestyle repair data into a primary care electronic health record (EHR) workflow (Mishuris, Wilson, & Mann, 2016). The actions that the author perform the study is to emerge and integrate the data straight to EHR and to see how to share the information sufficiently (Mishuris, Wilson, & Mann, 2016). The authors used a qualitative study utilizing two interviews rounds of semi-structured with primary care providers and used iterative design to the process of health information technology software and primary care providers to evolve consolidation (Mishuris, Wilson, & Mann, 2016). The conclusions of the study were there is the connection between the engagement and health outcomes of patients and the possibility to comprehend the significance of having the data available in the clinical settings (Mishuris, Wilson, & Mann, 2016). The research questions were not well framed and significant in my opinion and a bit confusing. The limitations of their study were low participants made the sample size insufficient which limits the reliability of observations (Mishuris, Wilson, & Mann, 2016). The research method used in this article was appropriate, and the conclusion does justify the result of the 5
study. The authors discussed on the results using the ground-theory thematic analysis from their interviews: (a) healthy lifestyles establishing barrier, (b) lifestyle medication program features, (c) the primary care provider report outcome, and (d) consolidation of primary care (Mishuris, Wilson, & Mann, 2016). The source is different than others because the authors are integrating how people are relying online on their weight loss and not relating with their primary care provider (Mishuris, Wilson, & Mann, 2016) although it is one critically important to get medical advice on weight loss. I believe the article is universal and the author does fill the gap in the literature. I do not know if I would like to be able to apply this method to my area of focus or project as I am more interested in how literacy could be useful in diabetes prevention. Grace, C., Begum, R., Subhani, S., Kopelman, P., & Greenhalgh, T. (2008). Prevention of type 2 diabetes in British Bangladeshis: a qualitative study of community, religious, and professional perspectives. BMJ (Clinical Research Ed.), 337a1931. doi:10.1136/bmj.a1931 This article aspired to understand the lay believes, religious teachings, perceptions of relation in diabetes prevention to Bangladeshi community. The methods used in this study was thematic analysis with the PEN-3 multilevel theoretical framework to inform the data analysis. Qualitative research was used with the incorporation of performing focus groups with semi- structured interviews. The conclusion of the study was the pattern, and expectation of Islam offer varieties opportunities for supporting the prevention of diabetes. The research study is replicable and methods used was appropriated with the efficient samples of 17 focus groups running purposive sampling in three sequential phases of community, religious, and professional perspective. The result of the study shows a passion for obeying the 6

cultural norms, relating to modesty and the religious leaders provided the Islamic teaching notes on the preventions of diabetes. Researchers believed that religions might play a strong role to support health promotion in the community. This article source is different than another source of the article because it incorporates the health literacy and religions on the focus study population. The article filled a gap in the literature and is universal. I will be able to apply this method in supporting my focus population’s view of religion and perception and belief of health prevention. Annotation of Mixed-Methods Research Articles Tanner, M., Islam, N. S., Tanner, M., Rey, M. J., Trinh-Shevrin, C., Alam, G., & ... Ghosh, K. (n.d). Understanding Barriers to and Facilitators of Diabetes Control and Prevention in the New York City Bangladeshi Community: A Mixed-Methods Approach. American Journal Of Public Health, 102(3), 486-490. The study aim in this article is based on a mixed-methods approach on understanding barriers to and facilitators of Diabetes Control and Prevention in the Bangladeshi community of The New York City. The trained health community workers oversee the focus groups participants of 169 Bangladeshi individuals. Researchers results show the indications of participants barriers to care, limited English proficiency, and limited knowledge of diabetes. However, they also see that participants demonstrate the willingness and interest in participating in the intervention of a community health worker. The methods used in this study was the focus group moderation and administration of 47 Bangladeshi women and men living in New York City. Researchers use ATLAS.ti Scientific Software in an iterative process to perform focus group analysis by analyzed survey data of SPSS and convenience sampling strategies. The research question was well framed and significant and the method used was appropriate, and the 7
research is replicable. The researchers did not communicate clearly and thoroughly, but the theoretical framework for the study was adequate and proper. This source of the article is different than others in the same field of the topic because it has the mixed-match study. I do not believe the report fills a gap in the literature, but it is universal. This source informs me in how the mixed-method research could easily confuse the reader. Although the cause provides my interest area of study in the effectiveness of health literacy and diabetes prevention in non-English speakers, I do not think I would like to apply this method to my area of the project. Whittemore, R., Rosenberg, A., & Sangchoon, J. (2013). A Diabetes Prevention Program Provided by Home Care Nurses to Residents of Public Housing Communities. Journal Of Health Disparities Research & Practice, 6(1), 14-29. This article purpose is (a) to modify diabetes prevention program with nurses of homecare, health professionals, and public house communities’ residents and (b) to calculate the feasibility and efficacy of the prevention of diabetes program provided by the nurses of the home care. The method used in this study was a mixed-method sequential design with the sample of 67 participants. Researchers conclude the vulnerable population of public housing with the low socioeconomic status is at multiple health risks as the residents have the limited access to health promotions program. The sample size was sufficient for this study, and it is replicable. The article makes an original contribution to the existing body of knowledge in prevention of diabetes. The research question was well framed and significant, and the methods of the study were appropriate. Researcher communicated clearly and thoroughly on this article without confusing the reader. There were adequate controls for researcher bias and their conclusions justified by the results. 8
This source of the article is different than others in the same field of diabetes prevention because researchers used the mixed- method for the study. Although many mixed-matched reviews can result in the reader confused, this article was presented, and it fills the gap in the literature. This might change my view on mixed-method for my future focus or project, but further similar research is needed to determine the use of this method. Synthesis of selected articles sources Conclusion After reading all the articles sources in qualitative, quantitative and, mixed-method research articles show the effectiveness of each intervention is based on the method used for research questions. I believe my focus study would be most appropriate using the qualitative research methods. When the quantitative study of statistical analysis on data-analysis can be intimidating to researchers, the qualitative study of methods for examining the social research without having to convert the numerical format (Babbie, 2017).
