Consider a hypothetical family member or friend who is now facing a serious health issue
or diagnosis such as cancer. How might knowledge gained through this course prepare you
to help this friend or family member better interact with health care system professionals?
In addition to being emotionally supportive friend or family member, what
recommendations or ideas might you recommend to this individual?
The knowledge acquired from this class will help me to assist a family member suffering
from hypertension. I will use the interpersonal and communication skills acquired from this
course to equip me with a basic understanding of medical terminology, which can assist me in
comprehending medical explanations and discussions more effectively. This knowledge will
assist me in helping her communicate effectively with her healthcare professionals by
encouraging her to ask questions, express her concerns, and actively engage in her care. I will
also assist her in preparing for appointments by gathering material and jotting down questions
ahead of time. The knowledge acquired will also assist me in coaching her and preparing her to
ask open-ended questions when interacting with healthcare professionals. Open-ended questions
will create a friendly environment that encourages the healthcare professional to understand her
healthcare condition and assist her accordingly (Petrocchi et al., 2019). Further, I will assist her
to organize and manage her medical information, including medication lists, test results, and
treatment plans. This will assist her to stay informed and ensure she is adhering to her doctor's
instructions.
In addition to being emotionally supportive of her, I will encourage her to engage in
regular physical activity, adopt a healthier diet, and manage stress effectively. I will also ensure
she takes her prescribed drugs as directed by her healthcare provider. I will, for example, assist
by setting up a medication schedule and reminding her when it is time to take her drugs. I will

also offer to go along with her to medical appointments. I will take notes throughout these
encounters, ask questions on her behalf, and make sure she grasps the treatment plan completely.
Further, I will encourage her to engage in stress-reduction techniques like meditation, deep
breathing, and yoga (Verma et al., 2021). Additionally, I will monitor her blood pressure
accurately and assist her in tracking her readings.
