It is the responsibility of the coroner, whether he is an elected or chosen official, in an area, to undertake investigations into deaths in specific categories, according to the law associated with that specific area. A death investigator investigates any death that is violently, unexpected, or suspect to ensure there is no foul play involved. There are several kinds of coroners, but one of them is a person who does not have a medical background or is not trained. It is a medical practice in which a medical examiner is responsible for determining the cause of death after someone's death by inspecting the body after they have died. Forensic pathology and death investigation are also important for medical examiners to have training in. “Medical examiners are appointed by the state and are usually board-certified doctors in the specialty they are assigned to, whereas coroners are elected laypeople who often do not have professional training” (Fierro, 2003). Here in the article, it should be considered because it gives a breakdown of some positive and negative outcomes that the system of coroners has to offer. “A coroner's system has several significant advantages, such as autonomy, power, and the ability to represent the will of the general public, which are all advantages of the system. A statewide medical examiner system is independent from politics and population size, and it provides superior forensic pathology and death investigations” (Fierro, 2003). As a coroner, you have a certain amount of authority in making certain choices, and that is one of the positive outcomes. One negative outcome that this system lacks is medical training which can have conflict of interest about the choices due to insufficient medical training. “Coroners and medical examiners are elected officials with limited terms of office, which is one of the disadvantages of having them as elected officials. An issue arises when requiring a certified forensic pathologist to manage the agency that determines the cause and manner of death” (Fudenberg, 2018). The role of a medical examiner conducts autopsies, performs
laboratory tests, and assists the police. A medical examiner is the most qualified scientist to determine what caused and how the death occurred, according to scientific principles. According to the distinctions above, a doctor is able to perform all the tasks while a coroner only has access to a limited number of these tasks if he is selected by the high court. A doctor is the most reliable and credible person who you can rely on for such experiences because they have a medical degree.
