Proposal Memo:
Memo
To: Professor Itua
Date: October 17, 2017
From: Team Ohlone Heat: Delpha Abella, Mariam Jalal, Wilde Purple, Martin Ruiz, Eric Silva
Project Title: Compost Home Heating System
Executive Summary
Our goal is to produce a more eco-friendly heating system for Afghanistan. Throughout this memo, we will provide more information on the case for our project, a brief description of the system in mind, provide some diagrams for better understandment, a list of the materials that will be used, as well as the total cost required for creating the system. A Case for the Project
Many homes in developing countries are affected by insufficient heating systems, such as dangerous methods which could expose harmful substances such as carbon monoxide to households. Our country of focus, Afghanistan, has winters that reach as low as 20
. Households in this region typically use gas stoves and heaters that pose ℉
dangers such as explosions. The burning of fossil fuels as well leaves a large carbon footprint. Implementing compost heating systems will provide the country with a safer way to heat their homes, not posing the dangers of natural gases and carbon monoxide build up in the homes. The compost used for the heater can then be used afterwards to provide nutrients to the soil as the country is semi-arid and crop production is limited to small areas of irrigable land. Project Description
How our project will work is that we will have a ten gallon container filled with compost. We will have an insulated tube, one end of it inside the container surrounded by the compost, and the other end will be attached to a fan. The fan is a part of a system of piping that terminates at a vent leading into a small, model home made of plexi-glass. This model home will be roughly around 3ft x 3ft in size. The ten gallon container filled with compost produces around 100 degrees Fahrenheit of heat in about 3-5 days. The heat is a result of the decomposition taking place within the compost. This heat will then
heat up the insulated tube. The heat from inside the tube will rise and travel throughout the pipe system with the aide of the fan into the home, thus heating up the home. As opposed to a conventional heater, instead of having the costly process of heating through natural gas and oil, this system will focus on using the heat produced
from the compost, harnessed in an efficient heat storing device, which in our model’s case will be the insulated tube. Design Illustrations:

I have some exciting news that may change the direction of the project drastically. We have secured funds from a new investor that will allow us to expand our campus much sooner then we initially thought. The HVAC design currently uses baseboard electric heaters around the perimeter, with a central forced-air heating and cooling system in the office space. The lab space design involves a 3 pipe hydronic piping system using gas fired boilers and electric chillers to produce heating and cooling. Considering we now plan to begin design on three more buildings immediately with the intention of having them all constructed within the next 7 years I would like to discuss the possibility of a district energy system. What are the benefits? Could the central utility plant be built in a way that would allow for expansion as the additional buildings are built? I know we have broken…

Problem 3: A small gearing system in your brand-new 3D printer fails as you were printing,
leading to an overload in the motor and a fire in your home. The fire spreads, burning half of
Everglades National Park in the worst environmental disaster in US history.
The printer company blames you! Stating that you must have been misusing the printer some-
how. Use your engineering knowledge to "show those jerks you mean business!"
You investigate and find a serial number on the gears and type it into Google, finding the
company that manufactures the gears. Their website provides some info that this series of gear is
made from AISI 4340 steel and the yield strength is 125 kpsi.
Assuming each gear tooth acts as a small cantilever, prove to the 3D printer company that they
are liable for the fire.

I would like to explore the possibility of using a lighting control system. There are times when office staff works long hours and researchers sometimes need to be in the building on nights and weekends. Often times they leave the lights on which increases my electricity costs. I would like to be able to program the lights on a schedule and if the staff needs to work outside that schedule they could request a change with our maintenance staff ahead of time. Could you please look into this and provide me with some potential options.

Your capstone design team is prototyping (e.g. you are building a model to test not a final product) a
"fire identification drone. The final product is intended to fly over rugged wilderness areas and look
for small fires that should be monitored and potentially fought or contained. It is NOT intended to be
used in large active fires. Your subteam's job is to design and build the support frame for the drone
(e.g. the structure where the motors, propellers, guidance electronics and GPS, heat sensors, radio
receiver and transmitter, etc. are attached) for the prototype. You have access to a machine shop
with saws, lathes (for removing material by rotating it and using a cutting tool), drills and a facility
with 3-D printers that can print a variety of plastics using fused deposition modeling (this is the
technique where a polymer filament is melted and forced through a nozzle to build a structure layer
by layer). You will be testing in a summer/fall timeframe so you expect temperatures…
