MMET 206 Lab Report No.5 Plastic Manufacturing Oda Kristine Borgstroem Section #503 10/19/2022
Introduction / Purpose: This lab will cover the three widely used plastic manufacturing methods. The three methods are injection molding, thermal forming, and compression molding. The focus in the lab will be learning the components of an injection molding machine and learning how the processes of thermal forming and compression molding works. The purpose of this lab is to develop an understanding of how the manufacturing works and understand the types of product manufacturing through each of the three methods. Approach / Method: During this lab the three plastic manufacturers procedures were demonstrated. Injection molding, thermal forming and compression forming. The first manufacturing process that was demonstrated was the injection molding process. To start off the process, the power button had to be switched on and the temperature on the scale had to be 420 F until the machine could be used. Once the temperature scale showed 420F, a mold was inserted in the red dotted circle. (Injection nozzle is aligned with the nozzle of the mold.) To manufacture the mold, the two operation buttons were pushed simultaneously, and melted PP is injected into to the mold through a nozzle. Then the mold comes out automatically. The other process that was demonstrated was the vacuum thermal forming sequence. To start off this process PP film was set up under the heater, then the vacuum1 and heater was turned on and maintained for 2 minutes to make the PP film soft. After the PP film was soften the heater was turned off and removed and the mold was moved up by toggle plated down to manual. Then, for suction the vacuum2 was toggled down after that the vacuum1 was turned of and the mold was moved to its original position. Data / Results: Process Parameters Injection Molding Vacuum Thermoforming Polymer used Polypropylene (PP) Polypropylene (PP) Type of Polymer Thermoplastic Thermoplastic Process Temperature (F) 420 212 Pressure (psi) 80 14.7 Process Time (minutes) ~0.2 ~2
