Name Date Advanced Engines - Homework - Engine Condition Diagnosis
1.
A fluorescent dye to an engine crankcase in order to locate an oil leak. The dye will glow when it is exposed to light.
2.
What engine mechanical components seal the combustion chamber?
3.
What problems or concerns may occur if the combustion chamber is improperly sealed?
4.
Describe pre-ignition and detonation (abnormal combustion).
5.
A power balance test used to determine .
6.
What information does a vacuum test provide?
7.
A cranking (static) compression test measures and should be performed when the engine is at .
8.
When performing a compression test, the readings on the cylinders are all even, but less than specification. This could indicate .
9.
You are performing a running compression test. What does this test indicate? (What are you actually checking?)
Use Chapter 26 and Internet Research to answer the questions.
10.What engine mechanical malfunctions would be revealed during a running compression test?
11.During a running compression that a cylinder rises to about 80% of the cranking compression pressure when the throttle is snapped to wide open. This would be an indication of .
12.A technician is measuring engine manifold vacuum on an engine. The readings are 20 inches of vacuum at idle and 10 inches of vacuum at 2500 RPM. This would indicate .
13.An engine has an engine misfire without internal engine noises. List the engine mechanical components that could cause this concern. (Doc ID 3258480 - 2015 Silverado)
14.A car runs rough and backfires through the throttle body. Compression is checked and all
cylinders and is acceptable. Cylinder leakage is checked and is acceptable. What would you suspect to be the most likely cause?
15.List some items that could cause excessive oil consumption with no external leaks.
16.
Blue-gray smoke coming from the exhaust. Tech A says may be caused by sticking piston
rings. Tech B says this could be caused by a plugged oil drain-back passage in the cylinder head. Explain which technician(s) is correct.
17.During a compression test, a cylinder has 40% of the specified compression reading. When the tech performs a wet test, the compression reading on this cylinder has 75% of the specified reading. The cause of the low compression reading could be .
Use Chapter 26 and Internet Research to answer the questions.
18.Excessive black smoke and sulfur smell from the exhaust of an engine with a mis-fire can be an indication of .
19.In engine noise diagnosis, noises synchronized to one-half the engine speed are normally
associated with the __
____________
and could be caused by .
20.
A heavy thumping noise occurs with the engine idling, but the oil pressure is normal. When the vehicle is placed in drive the noise diminishes. This may be caused by .
21.An engine is making a knocking sound that changes with RPM, and the noise disappears while a cylinder is being tested during the cylinder balance test. What would most likely be
the cause?
22.An engine exhibits a mis-fire concern caused by an engine mechanical condition. Describe which tests reviewed in this chapter you would use and in which order you would
perform them in order to best isolate this concern.
23.
A SOHC engine exhibits a low power concern. A vacuum test is performed. A low, steady vacuum gauge reading between 13” to 15” is noted. This would be an indication of .
24.List some components that may make abnormal engine noise only
when the vehicle is under load. (Document ID 3258503
- 2015 Silverado)
25.
Engine mechanical noises that occur on Start-Up but only last a few seconds are most likely caused by ? (Document ID 3258493 - 2015 Silverado)
Use Chapter 26 and Internet Research to answer the questions.

An engine starts and runs briefly after a small quantity of fuel is put into the spark plug hole, but it doesn't not start when fuel is added to the carburetor throat. Tech a says that the problem may be that the exhaust valve is not closing completely due to carbon buildup. Tech b says it may be due to a defective carburetor mounting gasket. Who is correct?

Task 8 - Induction Systems
In order for combustion to take place an induction system is required to feed fuel and air into the
cylinder of an engine. To improve efficiency and performance spark ignition (SI) engines are now
adopting compression ignition (CI) engine technology by injecting fuel directly into the cylinder
just before the point of ignition however these engines still require an air induction system.
Carburettors: before fuel injection technology had been fully developed carburettors (carbs)
were used to create a fuel/air ratio at different engine speeds and loads. A cold start facility was
also fitted albeit manually operated.
The demand for more performance has meant the fixed choke carb' was no longer suitable. More
complex carbs' were developed (twin choke) as well as variable choke (constant depression)
carbs which used engine vacuum (during throttle opening) to vary the size of choke according to
operating requirements.
