ME 3603 Spring 2024 Practice Problem Set 02 Work the following problems in your textbook: 4.1 4.2 4.3 4.9 4.10 4.12 4.13 4.21 Challenge: 4.4 …and the following problems: SP 4.1) One study of landlocked salmon in a New Hampshire lake found a mean length of 492 mm with a standard deviation of 46 mm. Assuming these are the true statistics, and assuming a normal distribution of body lengths… a) Find a range of body lengths that you would expect to include 95.0 % of the salmon in this lake. b) How large would a salmon have to be in order to be considered in the top 1.0 % longest salmon in this lake? c) What is the probability of picking a salmon at random that is between 446 mm and 538 mm? d) What about one between 492 mm and 560 mm? SP 4.2) Using Excel or MATLAB, plot all three data sets from Table 4.9 on a single histogram. Use the same bin values for each set. Each bin should have up to three bars ( i.e. , one per set). SP 4.3) Repeat Problem 4.10 using all 60 data points in Table 4.9 as a single data set. SP 4.4) Download the file GaussianDistributionExampleData.mat from Moodle. Use the load command in MATLAB to load the data array into memory. a) Calculate the 95 % confidence interval of the true mean using each set on its own. b) Calculate the 95 % confidence interval of the true mean using all 160 values as one data set. c) Repeat (a) and (b) with a 99 % confidence level. Repeat with a 90 % confidence level.
SP 4.5) You are asked to measure the rotational speed of a turbine shaft in operation. Due to random fluctuations in the system, the speed keeps changing (assume a normal distribution). You make the following measurements. 𝜔 1 = 1035 𝑟𝑝𝑚, 𝜔 2 = 1007 𝑟𝑝𝑚, 𝜔 3 = 1012 𝑟𝑝𝑚, 𝜔 4 = 1026 𝑟𝑝𝑚 a) There is a 90 % chance the average speed (true mean) falls within what range? ? ≤ 𝜔 ≤ ? b) There is a 90 % chance the next measurement will fall within what range? ? ≤ 𝜔 5 ≤ ?
