EDUC 750-DB Week 2-Discussion Thread: Valid and Ethical Conduct of Research
PROMPT:
Research should always be about finding out the truth and disseminating that information.
However, many findings are taken out of context, and data is used to further an agenda. Truth
matters. Why is it so important to conduct research that is both valid and ethical, and how can
this be accomplished? Support your discussion with scholarly sources and integrate a biblical
worldview perspective.
Not all research is valid. Valid research ensures that the findings that have been found reflect the
truth to the best that human understanding can determine (Check and Schutt, 2012). Check and
Schutt (2012) elaborates on research methods and ethical considerations for the field of
education. Check and Schutt (2012) also stress the need to conduct research that fits the
definition of valid research. Validity can have different faces; for example, Check and Schutt
(2012) state that there is the accuracy of your measurement, the accuracy of your data collection
methods, and the accuracy of your analytical techniques, all of which you have to have in order
to not yield completely inaccurate skewed data, which then produces inconstancies and glaring
holes in your search for truth. When research is valid, the knowledge seekers are provided with
true information.
Another important dimension of research is ethics. Ethics address how knowledge is obtained,
making sure that the pursuit of knowledge does not infringe on the welfare of the people or
communities studied (Check and Schutt, 2012). Ethics in research is devoted to providing the
best possible application of knowledge, from willing participants. Obtaining informed consent
from those willing participants is part of ethical research. Informed consent refers to giving out
all relevant information about the purpose and procedure, and any risks involved in taking part in
a research so that the participant consents knowingly. This enables free will in participation such
that people don’t take part under duress. This is in line with the respect for ones’
EDUC 750-DB Week 2-Discussion Thread: Valid and Ethical Conduct of Research
self-determination and dignity in the biblical worldview where freedom and choosing is greatly
appreciated (New International Bible, 2011).
Ethical research emphasizes the use of data that is trustworthy and also protects the privacy of
the people and their information. Such principles show that trust of participants will not be
broken. Researchers need to ensure that when participants provide their experience or data they
should know that this will be done in confidence. It also coincides with ethics inspired by several
religions, such as Christianity, which encompasss honestness, fairness, and respect to others.
Truth and ethics are extremely significant when viewed from a biblical worldview perspective.
In Christianity, the significance of truth is highlighted in John 8: As emphasized in John 8:32
(New International Bible, 2011) “then you will know the truth and it shall make you free”.
Therefore, research which is sound, if not ethical, has to be prioritized in a quest for truth. The
validity makes sure that the results of research are true and reliable, whereas ethics means the
acquisition of knowledge should not be detrimental to any person’s dignity and respect.

Good Morning, Christopher,
Thank you for your thought-provoking post in which you highlight the ethical issues in
educational research. In this respect you have pointed out one of the important aspects rarely
EDUC 750-DB Week 2-Discussion Thread: Valid and Ethical Conduct of Research
considered by research. Your discussion on the historical background of the Tuskegee syphilis
study is a frightening illustration of what can easily emerge as a result of unprofessional practice
in medical experiments on humans (Tuskegee Syphilis Study, 2001).
The discussed ethical principles are very important, such as obtaining an informed consent,
ensuring the privacy and confidence, refraining from coercion, and being objective (Liberty
University, 2023). To ensure the kind of trust outlined in the video, it is essential for educational
research to follow these ethical standards.
Your connection to John 13:34 highlights the need to care for each other (New International
Bible, 2011). This should be an indisputable principle as an educational basis requires a
compassionate attitude towards learners as well as mutual respect. Similarly, researchers should
demonstrate kindness and love they show during education towards participants in research by
carrying out their research carefully and with respect.
In speaking of validity and reliability in assessment you explain the topics clearly. Validity refers
to how well this instrument gauges an aim that should be measured; while reliability is used to
assess whether this instrument consistently measures an aim that should be studied (LeBlanc,
2023). Such aspects are important in the education research since they ensure that the data
collected is valuable and consistent.
Your reference to 1 Peter 2:17 which states “Show proper respect to everyone, love the family of
believers, fear God, honor the emperor” (New International Bible, 2011) means that when doing
research one should honor the dignity of the participants.
Thus, your post is a powerful reminder of what it means for researchers’ to protect ethics and
morality in educational research.

The moral and ethical duties into which the world of research revolves, is well stated in your
post. Indeed, the real heart of living as well as researching lie in discovering truth and practicing
virtue. Unfortunately, there have been cases of misconduct within research that were driven by
ulterior motives. For example, the Tuskegee Syphilis Study vividly demonstrate how easily
research can be exploited (
Tuskegee Syphilis Study
, 2001).
When undertaking research focused on collecting information from human beings, researchers
have great responsibilities. The ethics require them to maintain high standards in order to
guarantee the safety and security of the subjects in addition as well as retain the integrity of the
research process (Liberty University, 2023). This entails keeping confidentiality, minimizing
harm and ensure no conflict arises between the researchers or research participants.
EDUC 750-DB Week 2-Discussion Thread: Valid and Ethical Conduct of Research
Research is the cornerstone of any scientific studies and must also be valid so that its results are
reproducible (Check & Schutt, 2012). Validity can only be attained by strictly following research
methods which include well-planned study designs, accurate interpretation of findings, and
truthful account presentation.
Principles should show determination to ensure that the research is true and ethnically
acceptable. This kind of commitment is fundamental to the scientific studies being performed, as
well as for safeguarding the interests of participants and the public whose trust we seek to
maintain.
Proverbs 22:20-21, “20. Have I not written thirty sayings for you, sayings of counsel and
knowledge, 21
.
teaching you to be honest and to speak the truth, so that you bring back truthful
reports to those you serve?”(
New International Bible
, 2011) perfectly combines ethics and
validity in research . These verses highlight the importance of correct knowledge and authentic
revelation. This outlines a researcher’s obligation to deal truly with data and be frank about
outcomes. Integrity, accountability, and respect for the truth are the main pillars or research
ethics.
Finally, your post acts as an effective note about the direction in which research should be done.

Case Study – The New Engineer
Jeff was just hired by GSI, Inc. to be their Environmental and Safety Coordinator. This is Jeff's first position after completing his engineering degree. He had taken a course in safety engineering as part of his studies and felt confident that he could handle the job.
Management at GSI, Inc. has assured him that they are committed to maintaining a safe workplace. They have never had an individual dedicated to this task full-time. They will implement his recommendations if he can justify them.
As Jeff begins to get familiar with the operations, he spends considerable time on the production floor. He notices workers clean their tools before break with a liquid from an unmarked 55-gallon drum. They also use this liquid to clean residue from their skin. They use paper towels to dry their tools and hands, throw these towels in the trash, and head to the break room for a snack and/or smoke.
