EDUC 872- Week 2 Discussion Board - Curriculum Design and Responsibilities PROMPT When writing your thread, consider and address each of the following questions: How do you define curriculum? How does curriculum differ from instruction? Who is responsible for curriculum development? What are the responsibilities of a curriculum designer? What challenges do designers face in a school and/or from external groups? How should a Christian approach curriculum design? Curriculum consists of all aspects of a student’s learning experience, comprising the content, aims, procedures, and evaluation (Lalor, 2016). Marsh and Willis (2007) define curriculum as a set of planned activities, content, or experiences, through which learners actively participate in achieving specific objectives. The terms curriculum and instruction are different, although they are related. The structure or plan which serves as a guide on how to teach learners is called curriculum. On the other hand, the act of teaching involves instruction. Curriculum is “what” and “why,” and instruction is “how”. For instance, in a case where curriculum specifies that students should learn algebra, instruction is about how teachers provide effective lessons on algebra (Lalor, 2016) (Marsh and Willis, 2007). In most cases, the stakeholders hold responsibility for curriculum development. The main constituents include educational experts, curriculum planners and teachers. Administrators often control the process in order to make sure it correlates with the set objectives and instructional goals (Lalor 2016). Therefore, the development should be a collaborative activity and reflect the needs and goals of learners, and the community as a whole. Some of the key roles attributed to curriculum designers include specifying educational goals and objectives, choosing suitable materials and learning elements, developing assessment tools

They also align with the school’s mission, philosophy, and change their strategies towards emerging education trends (Lalor, 2016). The curriculum designer’s job is full of pitfalls such as changes of educational policies, meeting demands of different students, and managing all sorts of interventions from other external people (Brown et al., 2014). Such balancing act can be intricate and delicate. Principles such as love, compassion, and justice should guide a Christian approach to curriculum design. It is in this manner that Christian educators should ensure they teach Biblical values and virtues like kindness in order to promote moral development as well as forgiveness among children. At the same time, one should appreciate the special spiritual and ethics needs of learners and give them a sense of direction in the world. Christian inspired curriculum must have collaborations, empathy, and integrity as its themes. Proverbs 22:6 (New International Bible, 2011) states: “Train up a child in the right path and when he is old; he will not depart from it.” This verse highlights the need for a properly created curriculum which incorporates moral ethics and values that stay with students as they grow. Many facets of curriculum development have wide-ranging effects on education. It requires understanding its definition, differentiating instruction, and knowing the roles of curriculum designers (Lalor, 2016). Similarly, acknowledging the challenges and opportunities with a view to introducing a Christian approach is also likely to make the process of curriculum development better. It is, therefore vital that those in education- the educators themselves, administrators, students and all other stakeholders should work in collaboration so as to help student be successful and grow personally. In fact, the idea of the “curriculum” goes much deeper than the definition of a “course of study in school” proposed by the Meriam Webster dictionary. Curriculum development as you said to be a multi-faceted process with multiple stakeholder involved, has to take into account several factors such as; learning outcomes, teachers and parents. The Ii et al. (2018) and Saylor (1954) insights that defined curriculum as a general plan of action towards educating learners through organized orientation, object, and standard was interesting to me. One can see that curriculum development entails more than developing a syllabus – it comprises a structured plan for educators and various learning experiences for students. Additionally, you have highlighted significance of stakeholders on curriculum development. The process of developing a curriculum should not be considered as being confined within four walls

EDUC 872- Week 2 Discussion Board - Curriculum Design and Responsibilities of a classroom where a teacher interacts with their students. It is crucial for students to have a balanced education which satisfies both their specific needs as compared to the standards. You also noted the challenges curriculum designers undergo. As education keeps emerging, the need to consider issues such as equality among students, blending of learning, and incorporation of technology cannot go unobserved. The core educational goals should be maintained as curriculum designers have to adjust to these alterations. The Bible acts as a moral guide, your references to Genesis 11:6 and Chronicles 28:19, suggest that learning goes hand in hand with teaching and that in order for each component to work effectively towards conveying a message and achieving common goals, they have to be coupled and coordinated in an appropriate manner. Definitely this concept can help in the curriculum development and aligning of goals and effective teaching methodologies in order to have the most relevant learning experience possible (New International Bible, 2011). Lastly, your post helped clarify how complicated a curriculum becomes due to all the variables involved. Through the wider lens you’ve offered an understanding of the significance of good curriculum planning in the future of education. References: Ii, G. W., Oliva, P., & Taylor, R. (2018). EDUC 872- Week 2 Discussion Board - Curriculum Design and Responsibilities REPLY #2 Good Morning, Kirby, I appreciate your thought-provoking post regarding curriculum and instruction. Your personal definition of curriculum as being any material specifically intended for educating children with respect to any subject at any academic level is far more all-encompassing and encompasses a broader scope of materials than the ones typically found in dictionaries. That is not just what the curriculum means; rather it describes the way of teaching, objectives of each subject, and types of assessment as well as additional resources used in learning. Distinguishing between curriculum and instructions, as clarified by Lalor (2017) is critical. What is being taught includes curricular elements like materials, activities, and assessments, whereas how students learn relates to instruction as it involves different types of instructional strategies. Thus this clarification emphasizes on the interdependent nature of curriculum and instruction, especially the significance of instruction. Your discussion on curriculum development in different educational sectors is quite appreciable. Every single entity, including external organizations, school districts and even individual teachers have their contribution towards this matter. Your mention of Proverbs 8:22 regarding wisdom as a virtue is very impressive and worthwhile for this post. This verse reminds us about the necessity of honesty and wisdom in instruction. Wisdom is a global concept through which curriculum developers may help give their children a moral and ethical foundation upon which they build (New International Bible, 2011). References:
