Week 12 Extra Angular Momentum Practice 1.
Extra Angular Momentum Practice 2. Consider a flywheel made up of a disk of radius R and mass M attached to a massless rod at distance d from the origin. The disk spins with angular velocity ω around the massless rod which is at angle θ from the x − y plane. By considering the torque on the flywheel due to gravity calculate the frequency at which the rod pre cesses around the vertical z axis, Ω.

Eg.1 Will a ladder placed against a rough vertical wall remain standing when the floor is so smooth that there is no friction between it and the feet of the ladder? Explain. Eg.2 A non-uniform box, with its center of mass indicated by the dot, is placed on an inclined plane. In which of the four orientations shown, if any, does the box tip over? Explain.
Problem 2. A massless boom is hinged to a vertical mast of length a at A and supported by a horizontal massless cable BC of length b . A sailor of mass M is climbing out from A toward C along the boom. As a function of his distance s from A, calculate (a) the tension T in the cable; and (b) the force F exerted on the boom by the hinge. (c) If the cable has tensile strength N = 5 x 10 8 N/m 2 , what must its minimum cross sectional area be so that it does not break before the sailor reaches C? Take M = 100 kg, a = 3 m, and b = 4 m.

Problem 3. A uniform beam of mass m is supported at its ends on two fixed horizontal rails, as shown. There is a coefficient of static friction s between the beam and the rails.
