Situation: I needed to design a 3D model of a house with floorplans and 3D renders which match the 3D model precisely for a concept of a house accommodating the disabled and elderly. Task/Action: Approaching the need for accurate design and the need for exceptional quality, I underwent a brainstorming process in which many ideas were formed over multiple days. Within those days I created lists then sketches based on the consumer’s needs, for example, large living areas and easy accessible kitchen benches for the disabled and elderly. At the end of the process a design was chosen. However, a suitable program was needed, and research was done on that. In the end a program named ArchiCAD was chosen as it fulfilled 2 of the 3 (3D rendering and floor planning) needs for the design process. As such the 3D renders and floor plans created scale for the model and allowed me to go into further detail for the physical model provided. Result: The resulting product was of a high standard of quality and provided the consumer to fully understand the design and the eventual look and feel of the home which they were considering building. The brainstorming process and research processes made the creation and application of skills to go a lot smoother than if decisions were made on the spot as the model was being built. Personal feeling/Reflection: Initially the task was intimidating, with many aspects of the project needing to be complete at the same time. Although, as I progressed further into the project and ideas were solidified and concepts turned into working prototypes, the project became simple and methodological. As such, the was chosen based on the consumers’ needs and wants and would fulfill these needs and wants with a personal design aspect added to it by myself. Learning: Through initially processing the consumers’ needs and wants through the concept and brainstorming process, I solved the issues addressed by the consumer with simple, yet effective designs to compensate for their inability to behave or undergo what are perceived as normal every-day tasks. Upon reflection, however, there are improvements which could have been made by delving further into the issue of the consumers inabilities, such as: implementing modern solutions like lifts and sliding doors to enhance the consumers satisfaction.
