1 Head & Neck Exam 1) What is the name of the enlarged gland the instructor is examining. What is its function? The enlarged gland the instructor is examining is the occipital lymph and it plays a role in the body’s immune defense system. 2) What ethical principles are involved in this scenario? After reading this scenario I’ve come to realization that the ethical principles involved are: Beneficence : To promote the well-being of patients : by carefully spotting abnormalities findings Jenny can ensure Jack receives appropriate care. Veracity : Truth telling and being honest: It’s very important to be honest so Jenny being honest with what she finds while doing the exam and being honest that she actually completed a detailed examination would be practicing veracity. Nonmaleficence : Avoiding harm to others : When assessing the Head & Neck exam It’s very important to carefully focus on every detail. The goal is to avoid harm to the patient and if one just runs through the exam there's possibilities of missing abnormalities like in this scenario for example and if the instructor had not double checked there could have been possible harm to the patient if it was left unnoticed. Autonomy : Respecting patients rights and choice : It’s Jake's right to know what’s going on with his body so Jenny would discuss the enlarged gland that was found in his occipital and let him know he needs to get it checked by his physician. This would be respecting his autonomy. 3) How should Jenny address Jack's treatment? Jenny should hold off on dental treatment for Jack today and notify him of the abnormalities found and of course explain what this may mean for his oral health and recommend him to get checked out by his physician and reschedule an appointment for treatment after his medical eval.
2 4) What should Jenny do when treating future patients? It’s very easy to miss abnormalities when you're not attentive to details. So with her future patients Jenny should be more attentive throughout her examination to make sure she doesn’t miss anything. Not being careful when doing head & neck examination can cause Jenny to miss something and potentially breach one of the ethical principles. Gehrig, J. S., Sroda, R., & Saccuzzo, D. (2020).
