1. Respond to the prompts. This assignment is worth 10 points. Getting to know you. In two cohesive paragraphs with no less than five sentences in each paragraph, using your own words and first person “I” statements, respond to the following prompt. Share your academic goal, the reason for your choice, and how you plan to meet your goal. Explain how this course will help you achieve your goal and name two strategies you learned about in Module 1.1 to help you to be successful in the course. In this assignment, you are the  center  of discussion, and  you  must talk about yourself. (For example: I want to earn a degree in…. because…I...) My academic goals are to complete this course and continue with my education. I believe I am near the end of the adult ACE program and that means that soon I will be able to apply for additional scholarship opportunities. I hope that I can obtain some type of scholarship that will allow me to continue advancing my education and hopefully obtain at least an associate degree in computer science. I decided on computer science because I love computers and all things technology. I have a hard time with math and I know this path will likely involve plenty of mathematics-based classes which is a concern for me but I feel that if I do not challenge myself and get over my fears of math I will be left to pursue some other path that is ultimately not as fulfilling as the one that I know my heart is set on with computer science. I plan to achieve my goals by ensuring that I have enough time set aside to read over my course materials and take in the information so that I can achieve a passing grade in this class and my future classes.
2. Respond to the prompts. This assignment is worth 30 points. Demonstrating your critical thinking skills. Read the case below and follow the instructions. The ACME auto manufacturing company in Carsville, MI is the largest employer in the state. The last audit by the Department of Labor revealed a steady increase in occupational injuries over the last three years in the assembly plant. Ms. Mark, the CEO, called an emergency meeting because the Department of Labor threatened to halt production until the problems were resolved to restore a safe working environment. Administrators representing different departments articulated possible problem areas: two new automated systems, an increased number of women and people of color hired on the production line to meet the Equality Standards Act in the state, legalization of marijuana, the consistently late shipment of two auto parts out-sourced to Taiwan, and one safety-engineer quit. Instructions: In your own words, and while using what we learned in Lesson 1 to support your proposed evidence-based theory, write your theory about what is causing the increase in injuries at ACME, the solution you would propose, and why. For example, consider the empirical methods that researchers would use to approach this problem, and the advantage these methods have compared to other more common ways of approaching problems (e.g., intuition, values, opinions, etc.). Or, consider the central questions (Module 1.3) that guide research in the field. Use APA format and in-text citations to explain your answer. See Lesson 0 and/or library sources to assist with citing. You can use no more than two sources to support your answer. Use your voice to demonstrate that you understand the concepts.
While I believe that most if not all of the problems listed could lead to issues in maintaining a safe work environment I feel that two in particular at work taking a closer look at to understand how these are more likely to lead to problems. Firstly, the legalization of marijuana in the state. In my opinion, this one stands out as one that could be a massive problem if current workers at ACME are under the influence while at work. According to the NSC marijuana use at work employees who tested positive for marijuana had 55% more accidents in the industrial setting. (National Safety Council, Marijuana at Work) Additionally, according to the NSC marijuana users had 85% more injuries, 75% greater absenteeism compared to those who tested negative, and generally decreased productivity. I feel that based on this study from the NSC it provides more than enough information to conclude that if a large amount of the working force at ACME tested positive for marijuana it is likely a major problem leading to an overall less safe work environment. Secondly, ACME reports that one safety-engineer quit. Depending on the amount of hired safety engineers at ACME this could result in the remaining safety engineers being stretched thin at work and unable to provide adequate coverage in the workplace for the employees on sight. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the role of a safety engineer is to combine knowledge of engineering and health to develop procedures and design systems to protect people from illness and injury. (Health and Safety Engineers : Occupational outlook handbook 2022) Based only on the information provided we do not know how many safety engineers are hired on at ACME but if they list it as a potential problem it is possible that they had two and the loss of

one leaves them down a very important person in a very important position as they oversee the safety and safety procedures at ACME. Based on the above issues I would first conduct a drug screening to determine how many of the workers at ACME are using marijuana. I would then collect the results and evaluate the medical history of the workers with knowledge of the passing or failure of a drug screen for marijuana in mind. I personally do not mind marijuana use myself however it has no place in the workplace, and it seems logical to conclude that if someone fails a drug screen and also has many injuries at work they might be under the influence while at work which in my opinion is grounds for termination. Secondly and finally, I would hire another safety engineer and look deeper into the current safety-related practices at ACME. I feel that it would be a good idea to take a look at how safety is currently being handled at the company and having a fresh set of eyes on the situation could be helpful.
