2 Surgery Guidelines System: Respiratory Title: Respiratory System, Larynx – Endoscopy Guidelines: For endoscopic procedures, you should document the specific anatomical areas that were examined during the process. When performing laryngoscopy, it involves a thorough examination of the tongue base, larynx, and hypopharynx. During this procedure, you'll assess both central (single anatomical locations) and paired structures. Examples of central, single anatomical sites include the tongue base, valecula, epiglottis, subglottis, and posterior pharyngeal wall. Paired structures consist of the true vocal cords, arytenoids, false vocal cords, ventricles, pyriform sinuses, and aryepiglottic folds. For reporting therapeutic actions, any paired structures found on one side of the larynx or pharynx are considered as unilateral. If you utilize an operating microscope, telescope, or both, apply the relevant code only once during the operative session. Using the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (MPFS) look-up tool, here are five CPT codes related to the Respiratory System and their respective postoperative periods: 1.) 31530 – Laryngoscopy, direct, operative, with foreign body removal – 0 Postoperative Period 2.) 31525 – diagnostic, except newborn – 0 Postoperative Period 3.) 31520 – diagnostic, newborn – 0 Postoperative period 4.) 31528 – with dilation, initial – 0 Postoperative Period 5.) 31535 – Laryngoscopy, direct, operative, with biopsy – 0 Postoperative Period The CPT codes listed above are different type of examples of a Larynx Endoscopy along with their correct postoperative period. Accurately assigning the correct CPT codes for a debridement procedure and grasping the associated postoperative timeframe are crucial for proper billing and reimbursement.
