HLTSTE001- Assessment What you have to do This unit is concerned with the essential knowledge required to effectively follow steps in the cleaning and disinfection work flow process. This includes having knowledge on infection control and Spaulding’s classification. Answer all knowledge questions below. Type your answers in the fields provided. Save your answers in this document then submit via the OLS. You may need to refer back to your learning resource. 1. In your own words explain what standard precautions are. Standard precautions are the minimum infection prevention and control strategies used when providing care for a patient at any given time. These include - Hand hygiene - Personal protective clothing (PPE) - Gloves - Mask - Eye protection - Cleaning of reusable equipment - Aseptic techniques - Cough ettiquette - Respiratory hygiene - Appropiate handling and disposing of sharps 2. Name two main methods of cleaning used in the decontaminating area. Manual cleaning- is the physical removal of all visible soils by handwashing and scrubbing Mechanical cleaning- is cleaning surfaces by circulation, flowing cleaning soluitions and water rinses over that surface by using machines such as an ultrasonic. 3. Name what personal protective equipment you would be required to wear when reprocessing reusable medical equipment. PPE that you are required to wear would be: - Saftey goggles - Face shield - Mask - Gloves - Gown with long sleeves - Shoe covers By using all this it would provide enough protection to any exposure. 4. Define cleaning Cleaning is the removal of any visable and non visable oils such as blood, bone and debris from all surfaces and equipment by manual or mechanical cleaning procedures. 5. Name two main types of soils. The two main types of soils are visable and non visable contaniments Viasble soils are organic blood, bone and some tissues, grease, fats and oils also in-organic oils such as general dirt, dust and chemical stains. Non viasble soils are bacteria and viruses also known as micro-organisms. 6. What is the time temperature relationship for thermal disinfection? There are varied temperatures and times for sterility to be achieved These are: 80 degrees celcius the cycle would take 10 minutes 90 degrees celcius the cycle would take 1 minute 93 degrees celcius the cycle would take 30 seconds 7. Briefly explain in your own words thermal disinfection. Thermal disinfection uses moist heat to kill bacteria and viruses by using a set temperature for a set amount of time. This destroys the proteins in the bacteria rendering the bacteria lifeless. Thermal disinfection can only be achieved by mecahnical cleaning. 8. The cleaning process depends on several factors. Identify 4 of these factors. - PH of the detergent - Quality of the water - Type of instrument and the surface being cleaned - Mechanical factors, Physical effort, scrubbing or rubbing 9. List five categories of equipment cleaned in SSD. - Respiratory equipment - Basic surgical equipment - Laparoscopy or minimal invasive equipment - hollowware - Microsurgery instruments 10. Name one advantage of thermal disinfection. Thermal disinfection prevents cross contamination which improves infection control procedures and health risks are minimised. 11. Name one disadvantage of thermal disinfection. Thermal disinfection can be a slow process as many objects can not tolerate the high heat that is required to achieve sterility. 12. In 1968 Earle Spaulding devised a rational approach to disinfection and sterilization. This is now referred to as Spaulding's classification and it has been refined and retained over the years because it is so clear and logical. Spaulding believed that 2 LA020990 Assignment 1, HLTSTE001 Ed 1 © New South Wales Technical and Further Education Commission, 2016 (TAFE NSW – WSI), Archive version 1, March 2016
instruments and equipment should be cleaned and reprocessed according to the level of risk associated with their intended use. In the table below, give examples of different items. Level of risk Application Process Examples Critical Entry or penetration into sterile tissue Sterility required Surgical instruments, needles, syringes, dental instruments Semi- critical Contact with intact non sterile mucosa or non intact skin Sterilization preferred where possible. If sterilization not possible then high-level chemical disinfection required flexible endoscopes, reuasble bedpans, anaesthetic equipment Non- critical Contact with intact skin Clean as necessary with detergent and water stethoscopes, cruthes, blood pressure cuffs, environmental surfaces 13. Whether the cleaning process is performed manually or mechanically, the same basic steps need to be performed. What are these basic steps? The basic steps for the cleaning process are: -Pre -rinse - Wsah - Rinse - Drying 14. SDS is a document specifying the properties of a substance, its potential hazard effects for humans and the environment, and the precautions necessary to handle and dispose of the substance safely .Find a SDS that you use in your workplace or go on the internet and answer the following questions: a. What section in the SDS informs us of the first aid measures? Section 4 ( Safe work Australia 2012) b. What section on the SDS contains information on small and large spills? Section 6 ( safe work Australia 2012) c. How long is the SDS valid for? The SDS must be reviewed every 5 years (Safework Australia 2012) d. What section on the SDS can you read toxicological information? Section 11 (safework Australia 2012) 15. Read the following scenario then answer the questions that follow: LA020990 Assignment 1, HLTSTE001 Ed 1 3 © New South Wales Technical and Further Education Commission, 2016 (TAFE NSW – WSI), Archive version 1, March 2016

After loading equipment into the washer/disinfector and choosing the correct cycle, you commence the load. When you return back to monitor the process cycle, the washer/disinfector has aborted the load. The printout is reading error. a. Who would you report the problem to? The problem needs to be reported to your manager so repairs can be organised. This needs to be documented and a tag should be placed on the faulty equipment. b. What do you do with the load in the washer/disinfector? As there was an error reading the load is not sterilised so therefore it will need to be pout aside until the steriliser is fixed and then reprocess that load or send it elsewhere to be sterilised. 16. What do you look for when checking the printout from the washer/disinfector? The main purpose for the printouts are to make sure that all paramerters were met during the cycle. This requires continuous monitoring so it can be referred to at any time. The printout will verify the time, temperature and pressure are all correct for that particular load. It is mandatory to validate a load once the cycle has finished prior to unloading. 17. Why is documenting and record keeping important? Having a fully documented process is essential as it covers what processes and procedures are in place and how they are tracked, measured and adhered to. This verifies that the process has been completed and it can be reviewed at any time. 18. Name the preparation and testing function carried out by the SSD operator for a mechanical cleaner used in the decontaminating area. Cleaning assurances are done in 3 phases Validation testing- this confirms the fuctionality of the machinery routine monitoring- is performed with each cycle to verify its continuous effectiveness verification testing- to confirm instruments are effectively cleaned and is in the final check before sterilisation Checklist I have: o answered all questions in the space provided o saved my answers in this document.
