PETE 225: Homework #2: Due Feb 18 th by 12:59 pm **Show your work for all questions a direct reference to Halliburton’s Redbook showing where you found the final answer is not showing your work** _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Question 01 (15%) The relationship between flow rate in the annulus Q and the mud velocity in the annulus v is given by: 𝑄 = 0.0408 × 𝑣 × (𝐷 2 − 𝑑 2 ) where Q gpm v ft/min D (external diameter of the annulus) in d (internal diameter of the annulus) in Derive the constant 0.0408. Consider the following data to answer questions 02 to 05. A drillstring is composed of drillpipes and is totally immersed in the hole (you have mud inside & outside the drillstring). Drillstring length 5,000 ft Openhole diameter 9 in Drillpipe outside diameter (OD) 5 in Drillpipe inside diameter (ID) 4 in Question 02 (15%) Calculate the pipe capacity AND the pipe displacement factors in ft 3 /ft, gal/ft, and bbl/ft. Question 03 (15%) Compute the time (min) required to pump mud from the surface to the bit. Question 04 (15%) Compute the time (min) required to pump mud from the bit to the surface. Question 05 (15%) An annular velocity of 150 ft/min is required to efficiently clean the hole. Compute the minimum flow rate that gives this annular velocity in the annulus.
Question 06 (15%) Assume you are pumping a heavier mud of 12 ppg at the bottom of the annular space between the drill string and the hole. The total vertical depth is 8,000 ft and the fracture pressure at the bottom is 4,500 psi. The heavier mud is displacing the original mud of 9 ppg. What is the maximum allowable height of the heavier mud in the annulus (measured from bottom) for not fracturing at bottom? Question 07 (10%) In your own words briefly explain the terms below. The answers need to be HANDWRITTEN. a) Crown block b) Kelly bushing c) Topdrive d) Monkey board e) Mouse hole f) Drawworks g) Drilling line h) BOP
