Memorandum To: Mr. Charles James From: Alyssa Sanchez Date: October 20, 2023 Subject: How to Play Uno The primary purpose of this memo is to teach the procedures on how to play the widely known game from Mattel known as Uno. This game is a family game for anyone seven years old and older. This game requires two to ten players. Figure 1 Mattel Uno game package The game package includes 112 cards o 19 blue cards numbered 0 through 9 o 19 green cards numbered 0 through 9 o 19 red cards numbered 0 through 9 o 19 yellow cards 0 through 9 o 8 “skip” cards – 2 in each color o 8 “reverse” cards – 2 in each color o 8 “draw 2” cards – 2 in each color o 4 “Wild” cards o 4 “wild draw 4” cards o 4 blank cards o Instructions Figure 2 Uno game cards
The objective of the game is the first player to execute all of their dealt cards in their hand. Each round will score points for the cards the other plays still possess in the deck. The first player to score 500 points wins the game. To begin setting up the game, each player will draw a card. Whichever player that obtains the highest value in the drawn card will be deemed as the dealer. Then the dealer will shuffle the deck and distribute seven cards to each player. The remaining cards will be facedown to create a “draw” pile (see figure 3.) This pile will be drawn from whenever a player cannot place a card to match the previous card or given a draw 2 or 4 card. Figure 3 “draw” pile for uno game There are specific cards such as draw 2, reverse card, skip card, wild card, wild draw 4 card, and a blank card. When a draw two is placed down, the player in rotation will draw two cards from the draw pile. When a reverse card is placed down, the rotation of player will be reversed and change rotation in the opposite direction. The skip card placed means the next player in rotation will not be able to distribute a card in the pile. A wild card placed means whichever player that placed down may pick any color to play the game. When a wild draw 4 card is placed, this allows the player who placed it down to pick whichever color and the next player in rotation must draw four cards. A blank card is deemed a special card that one may use to pick whichever rule you want and any color. After understanding all the game cards and where to begin, the game may start to be played. First, the player to the left of the dealer begins the game. Player rotation will begin left after that as well. You must match the top card on the “discard” pile either by number, color, word, or usinga. wild card. If the prior played a green 4, the next player must distribute a similar color, number, or card that allows them to place whatever. If the player needing to distribute does not have a card to play on the discard pile, the player must draw a card. If the drawn card matches or can be used in the discard pile to match the previous card, it may be played. If not, the player just draws the one card, and the turn moves to the next player in rotation. Before playing your next to last card, you must say “UNO.” If you don’t say UNO when placing your second to last card, another player may catch you and shout “uno” which means the player with one card left must draw four. Another player calling “uno” will not allow the previous player to say it anymore. If the player with one card left shouts “uno” and no other player catches them, the “uno” is acceptable. “Uno” also applies if the player with one card left does not call
“uno” immediately but no other players catches that the player only had one card left. The second to last uno card must reach the discard pile before any “uno” may be said. If you are the first player to get rid of all your cards, you will get points for each cards left in other players’ hands. The Uno winner will be the first player to obtain 500 points. The scoring will go as followed (see figure 4.) Figure 4 Uno scoring guide There are more detailed instructions included in the Uno game box. The detailed instructions will include more about when there are two players left in the game and how to successfully play on teams.
