ELM-470 Field Experience A
Working with my mentor teacher and attending a curriculum meeting about math was very
insightful. First, I talked to my mentor teacher about math in their classroom and how it works.
We talked about how they do whole group math as well as small group stations for math. We
then looked at their class’ math workbook and other supplementary worksheets to go along with
it. There was great classwork with more work to enforce what was learned. She also talked to
me about how each week they send home optional math work that can be done at home with
family and that is kind of fun. From there she showed me her cabinets that were dedicated to
math games and math manipulatives. I didn’t realize how much really goes into math so this
was incredibly helpful to see all the tools that can be used. We then talked about how helpful
manipulatives are for the students and how it really helps them learn better. At the grade team
curriculum meeting we talked about the standards for math that we want to be hitting these next
few weeks. We also talked about how we would get to that point. We went through the
curriculum in the book as well as supplemental materials that would reinforce these standards.
From there we talked about math centers that each teacher was planning to do and what
standard they would reinforce. This curriculum meeting was definitely helpful for me to learn
how much planning goes into all of this and how important collaboration with your team is. I was
very impressed by the meetings offered at this school. On Mondays there is all staff meetings to
go over different topics each week. Then at least once a week all the teachers of a grade level
have an hour to work together to collaborate while their students are in specialty classes. This is
extremely helpful for the teachers since they can have time during the day to sit down, talk, and
plan. They also have such a strong curriculum leader as well as an academic support team.
They can plan extra meetings with them and have meetings every so often with them for check
ins and updates. From all of this that I learned, I will definitely really want to collaborate with my
grade level team wherever I work. I also want to use the most of my resources that my school
offers to me. I also want to have a good amount of manipulatives and games for my students to
use so they can have fun while learning.
