Clinical Field Experience A: Instruction Across Grade Levels
ECE 630
LaQuanta Strickland I spent time interviewing Mrs. Prins who teaches Kindergarten and Ms. O’Neil who is a 1
st
grade teacher.
They both serve as the lead teacher for their grade level. Both teachers had very similar techniques they used for scaffolding. They both said that they model everything. Kindergarten is all about modeling, this helps the students to make a visual connection. Mrs. O’Neil breaks the lessons down by first introducing new vocabulary. She feels that knowing the proper math terminology builds success for all subjects, not just math. Mrs. Prins says she likes to get her class talking by showing them an image related to the skill they are learning. She does this because it draws out what is already known to the students. This type of
instruction incorporates concepts from previous knowledge or grade levels. Mrs. O’Neil uses organizers where the students will tell what they know, what they wonder, and what they learned. She says it keeps the students writing and it lets her know in what direction she should go in as far as instruction. Both teachers have a collaborative meeting once a month with other grade levels. Kindergarten meets with Pre-K teachers and 1
st
meets with 2
nd
. They discuss mostly reading and comprehension skills and standards that correlate with each grade and discuss techniques on how to advance the students. They share ideas and they help the on-grade level students as well as the below grade level students.
Reflection:
Describe how scaffolding could be the basis of instruction.
Scaffolding can be the basis of instruction because it supports the students. It encourages the teacher to be a facilitator rather than an expert. You model things and give students the independent freedom to show you what they have learned. This build on knowledge and confidence. It also creates a space for students to ask questions prior to learning.
Explain the purposes and benefits to students when teachers collaborate between grade levels.
When teachers collaborate within grade levels it helps teachers to identify the best practices that continuously help students. It helps them to differentiate as well for the students who are above grade level and it triggers a higher level of thinking and doing within teachers.
Describe how you can apply what you learned about designing and implementing standards-
based math instruction to your future teaching practice
I am teaching Kindergarten now and it was so nice to see that I have been using some of the scaffolding technique used in Mrs. Prins class. It seems as if most curriculums have scaffolding built into it now days which is so helpful. This proves that scaffolding is a basis for learning new material. In addition to scaffolding, I learned that it is important for students to make sense of a problem and understand why they are learning it. This is something I will make sure I incorporate in the future.
