Reflective Journal Question:
1. What does it mean to differentiate instruction by content using complexity?
2. What does it mean to differentiate instruction by content using resources?
3. What does it mean to differentiate instruction by content using environment?
Your Answer:
1.) To differentiate instruction by using complexity means to use the three tiered lessons. The
lessons are concrete level, symbolic level, and abstract level. For the concrete level
students will use objects to learn so say in math students use counting blocks or shapes to
learn a lesson. For the symbolic level students will learn the content as it is represented
through pictures or illustrations. Lastly for the abstract level students will use words and
ideas to convey their understanding. Changing the activity can provide a rich, diverse,
multimodal approach for the class.
2.) To differentiate instruction by using resources you have to tailor the type and level of
information for student accessibility. You can use resources such as informational texts,
narrative, texts, multimedia resources, or human resources. For informational texts this
could be using a text book for your students to learn from. For narrative texts this could
be reading your students a book. For multimedia resources this could mean showing your
students a video and for human resources this could be a hands-on activity.
3.) To differentiate instruction by using the environment you can use places such as the
classroom, a neighborhood, community, virtual environments, etc. This could be teaching
a lesson in the classroom and then switching to the library to use resources to further
teach your lesson. It could also mean teaching about a certain geographical area and then
virtually viewing that place so your students can feel like they are there.
