1 Personal Philosophy Paper Kristoria Williams School of Education, Liberty University EDUC 630: Technology Practices for Instructional Improvement Dr. Amanda Roberts January 28, 2024
2 Personal Philosophy Paper Growing up technology existed, of course, but it was not as essential in school as it is no. Coming from an era of textbooks, pencil, and paper, it is amazing to see the impact has made on student success. For a while, at the beginning of my career, I could not understand the major push for integrating technology in my classroom. Once I observed how technology increased student engagement, I was more for integrating technology in my class. Integrating technology into education is of considerable value because using technology effectively has the potential to make learning meaningful (Reddy & Bubonia, 2020). We live in a world today, where technology is essential. Technology is needed inside and outside of the classroom. We cannot escape technology no matter where we are. Technology is a part of our education system because it helps enhance students learning. The role of technology in the field of education is fourfold: it is included as a part of the curriculum, as an instructional delivery system, as a means of aiding instructions and also as a tool to enhance the entire learning process (Raja et. al, 2018). Technology has helped with preparing students for their future careers. Three to four years ago, technology played a major role in our education system as the COVID pandemic shut schools down. As it seemed to be viewed in a negative perspective, COVID demonstrated the necessity for technology in the classrooms. We, as educators, learned that students prefer technology over the “old school” way of learning as it gives them a sense of independence and they can take care of their own digital needs. As generations continue to grow, change is a necessity. Therefore, it is our professional obligation to include technology in our classrooms these days. I do not feel that it should be used in the classroom everyone because students will start to experience boredom and burnout. Teaching should be done more using paper and pencil. Checking for student understanding should be technology based. Looking at it
3 from this perspective gives your students to fully engage in class lessons, but have a chance of showing their understanding at their pace on their level of understanding. Technology allows teachers to set activities and assignment to match individual students’ academic levels. Before assigning digital activities in your class, you should have the answer and reasoning to how it will benefit your students and increase their understanding. Overall, we want technology to be an advantage as a whole. With technology, classrooms could benefit from blended learning. With blended learning, students strengthen professionalism as they develop qualities like self- motivation, self-responsibility, and discipline (Dangwal, 2017). Biblical Defense Proverbs says “Whoever heeds instruction is on the path to life, but he who rejects reproof leads others astray” (10:17, ESV). Technology is constantly evolving. As educators, we have to continue to learn and implement technology in our classrooms so that we can teach our students. It is important that we allow students to learn from the technologies, as well as see them as teachers. If we do not create an environment where they can use technology successfully, we fail to encourage them to explore new opportunities. Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight (Proverbs 3:5-6, ESV). Technology is not something that will be going away. It is important for educators to cultivate and encourage student learning through technology. “All things are lawful for me,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful for me,” but I will not be dominated by anything (1 Corinthians 6:12). It is important educators take the time to integrate technology in their classrooms to reach their students on another level. Technology does not have to dominant your classroom, but it should be included. The only thing that is constant is change.
