Convenience stores offer a speedy service to people in a time crunch, especially those who want to get out speedily. Convenient stores usually have extended hours of operation, and they are in convenient locations. Most convenience stores also sell gasoline for motor vehicles. The average time it takes someone in a convenience store is around 5 minutes. The industry of convenience stores is a destination for food and refreshments. Due to their small size easy access and huge presence in the United States, they have become a staple for the nation. The number one leading convenience store is 7 level. The number one item sold at convenience stores besides fuel is cigarettes. Most people shop at convenience stores while running errands and the most popular times are between 4 pm and 7 pm. 7-Eleven is a mix between a convenience store and a gas station. The original hours of 7 eleven were 7 am to 11 pm. Some 7 eleven never lock their doors. The Wawa even has self-serving kiosks for the consumer to order their needs. Some convenience stores have mobile payments where a customer can scan an item on their phone and pay for it. "An average convenience store selling fuel has around 1,100 customers per day or more than 400,000 per year. The U.S. convenience store industry conducts about 160 million transactions per day" (convenience.org, n.d.). Self-serve is a major part of how convenience stores operate. Self-pumping at gas stations is available in 48 states. During the invention of the convenience store, everyone wanted to get the direct items that they deemed essentials in a standardized and organized manner but also at a quick pace so that way they were not inconvenient. Convenience stores typically do not have shopping carts compared to grocery stores. Convenience stores are in high-traffic areas such as neighborhoods, mass transit hubs, commercial complexes, and educational institutions. A convenience store normally sells food and gasoline. Convenience stores have extended hours, and many are open 24 hours and are open every day of the week. Most convenience stores are hard to be profitable and many need
renovations before being opened. Some convenience stores also sell lottery tickets. Due to the cash transactions and lack of security convenience stores often get targeted for robberies. Convenience stores should have proper surveillance systems. The employees of the convince store should also be trained to acknowledge everyone who enters as well as the various techniques that are used when people are attempting to shoplift. The convenience store should also have proper lighting in both the interior and exterior of the convenience store. The owner of the convenience store should also make several bank trips throughout the week while utilizing different routes. Employees should also be trained in how to manage a robbery situation. It is important that the convenience store can have their employees visible from the outside this is because if a potential robber can see an employee while they are on the outside of the building and the employees can see the parking lot then people would be less comfortable committing the robbery. "In 2021, gas stations and c-stores had a combined 37,561 violent criminal offenses reported to the FBI — equating to over 5% of the country’s overall violent crimes that year, according to the FBI’s most updated Law Enforcement Data Explorer" (Starr, 2024). My second type of store is that of retail stores. Retail stores are vital for the experience of shopping. A retail store is a physical establishment where consumers purchase products as well as services from the establishment. They play an important role in displaying products, promoting brands, and even the delivery of personalized customer service. Many different types of stores fit under the retail store umbrella. This can include but is not limited to department stores, car dealerships, and online stores. Retail is the largest employment sector in the entire United States, and it has close to 10 million employees. In retail stores, the retail associates help the customers as they shop to provide them with the most satisfying experience possible. A retail store is often a place that involves buying and breaking down bulk items, displaying the bulk items, and even sometimes
the delivery of goods. Retail stores deal with people of all sorts of different backgrounds, needs, and even budgets. A security issue that a retail store might face is that of shoplifting. Shoplifting affects the retail stores and even affects their profit margins. Retail stores can implement various preventive measures such as surveillance systems. They should also have a visible security presence as well as anti-theft devices to help stop shoplifting and prevent suspicious activities when they occur. Another major concern for retail stores is that employee theft can come from stealing merchandise or even committing refund fraud. Another thing that retail stores need to be on the lookout for is vandalism and property damage. These can impact both the physical environment and the customer experience. These can create financial losses as well as create an unsafe and unwelcoming environment. This can be mitigated using surveillance cameras, proper lighting, and even physical barriers. A retail store should implement safety protocols and conduct regular inspections and training in emergency response procedures.
