Running Head: Personal Leadership Evaluation 3 CliftonStrengths The five CliftonStrengths that my assessment identified were Harmony, Discipline, Restorative, Developer, and Belief. Three of my strengths are in the executing theme and two are in the relationship building theme. Strengths in the executing theme are related to making things happen. Strengths in the relationship building theme relate to building strong relationships that help form a team. Each strength does match my personality and does indicate how I lead. Harmony The first CliftonStrength the assessment identified for me was harmony. Harmony is a part of the relationship building theme. According to the “Signature Themes” report, someone with a harmony strength looks for areas of agreement, a person with this strength does not find disagreement and conflict productive. A person with this strength looks for a collective agreement between all arguments and tries to bring people to harmony around that common ground. This perfectly describes my leadership; I much prefer to find common ground with solutions to resolve problems. Conflict only stands to break up a team and cause long term issues within the team. I also will hold my opinion if I feel it would upset the team or might cause further conflict. Due to this, I tend to lead by being supportive of my team and allow others to take charge but provide support wherever my team has a need. Discipline The second CliftonStrength the assessment identified for me was discipline. The discipline strength is part of the executing theme. According to the “Signature Themes” report,

Running Head: Personal Leadership Evaluation 4 someone with a discipline strength, prefers a structured and planned day. A person with this strength would much prefer a day with routines. Big projects that are being coordinated with someone with this strength will break projects into short terms, with goals and strict deadlines. This strength also describes my leadership style. Although not perfectly, if something were to come up, I am not as against making changes when they are required. I do; however, I always make plans for my day, with a list of things I would like to get accomplished in my day or work week. I lead the same way, giving plans with specific due dates. This is important, so the team knows exactly what is expected of them during their work week. Restorative The third CliftonStrength the assessment identified for me was the restorative strength. The restorative strength is part of the executing theme. According to the “Signature Themes” report, someone with the restorative strength is someone who loves to solve problems. Someone with the restorative strength is energized by a breakdown or roadblock when trying to solve a problem. Someone with this strength really enjoys studying mistakes, going back to the drawing board, and using the mistake to help find the solution. This strength describes my leadership style because I do believe in trial-and-error leadership, where there is value in making mistakes, so long as people learn from their mistakes. I also find a workday more rewarding when I know I can solve a complicated problem and know that I am able to help make someone’s job easier because our team was able to find an answer to a problem.
Running Head: Personal Leadership Evaluation 5 Developer The fourth CliftonStrength the assessment identified for me was the developer strength. The developer strength is part of the relationship building theme. According to the “Signature Themes'' report, someone with the developer strength is someone who sees the potential in others, someone with the developer strength is always striving to help grow a person and bring out the best in everyone. A leader with this strength will always try to put their employees in the best position to succeed. This strength describes my leadership style perfectly. I very much believe in helping people become better and believe everyone has skills to grow. Everyone is great at something, but they could always learn to be better at that skill. It is also important to understand not only people’s strengths, but also their weaknesses, to help develop those weaknesses and to bring in other team members who have strengths where our team has weaknesses. Belief The fifth and final CliftonStrength the assessment identified for me was the belief strength. The belief strength is part of the executing theme. According to the “Signature Themes” report, someone with the belief strength has core values that they take with them. The core values give someone with the belief strength a sense of direction, purpose, and a guiding principle through tough decisions. Someone with the belief strength is usually easier to trust because you know where they stand and there are lines, they will not cross.
Running Head: Personal Leadership Evaluation 6 This strength describes how I lead. I very much have strong values that I hold in high regard. I will always do what is right for not only my team, my company, and myself. Having core values to help guide decisions makes decision making much easier and helps your company know you will always make a decision that will not put the company or team in a situation that they will be embarrassed or on the wrong side of an issue ethically speaking. Leadership Strengths One of the scholarly leaderships I excel at is servant leadership. Servant leadership is a leadership style where the goal is to lead by serving. Someone who excels at servant leadership will always do what the team needs, being available for their team to work on tasks, develop talent, talk through issues, etc. According to Servant Leadership: Its Origin, Development , an excerpt from the Journal of Leadership and Organization Studies, 2002, Vol. 9, No. 2., “Servant leaders portray a resolute conviction and strong character by taking on not only the role of a servant, but also the nature of a servant.” This excerpt sums up servant leadership perfectly, someone who leads by servant leadership will not only always be willing to help wherever the team needs them, but someone who embodies servant leadership will start seeing needs and completing them for the team in the background. One of my top strengths from the CliftonStrengths assessment was the developer strength. This strength is important when leading by serving. Someone who has the developer strength will always want to bring out the best in people. I think this strength fits within the servant leadership scholarly leadership theory because someone with the developer strength is always going to want to develop a skill that will help support the team member in their current

Running Head: Personal Leadership Evaluation 7 role and in future roles. I think being a servant leader requires that I support my team to complete the goals of the organization, but also support the team’s individual career goals. One of my other top strengths from the CliftonStrengths assessment was the restorative strength. Someone with the restorative strength thrives on roadblocks. This is a trial-and-error type leadership strength. I think this strength fits within the servant leadership scholarly leadership theory because someone with this strength will want to help to remove barriers and by turning team failure into success. The last top strength from the CliftonStrengths assessment is the belief strength, someone with this strength uses their core values to guide them through decisions. Someone with this belief strength becomes more trustworthy because a team member will know exactly what is expected of them and where their leader stands. I think this strength fits within the servant leadership scholarly leadership theory because someone with this strength would always be there to support someone with their core values. Leadership Weakness Three weaknesses of my leadership fall in the transactional leadership. Transactional leadership, is like a transaction in a store, usually requires two parties, one who is buying merchandise and one who is being compensated, both get what they want, and walk away feeling successful. This is remarkably like how transactional leadership works, “leaders give followers something they want in exchange for something the leaders want. Transactional leaders engage their followers in a relationship of mutual dependence in which the contributions of both sides are acknowledged and rewarded” (The Academy of Management Review. 12(4):648-657). I
Running Head: Personal Leadership Evaluation 8 think what this really comes down to is perspective, while thinking about this, this type of leadership exists in everything we do, but not everyone views leadership in this light. One reason this is a weakness is because I do not operate on the level of needing something in return for doing my job as a leader. I think as a leader, I do not want my team to always think I have an alternative motive for supporting them. For example, if I asked a team member, who aspires to lead their own team, to take charge on a project, I would be asking them to take charge, because they could do this and could help their career going forward. Thinking about this example, I see this as a perfect opportunity to support a team member who has been looking for career growth, whereas someone who falls in the transactional leadership scholarly theory might see this as an opportunity to have one less thing on their plate. Another reason I consider this a weakness is because I do not have the analytical skills to execute this type of scholarly leadership skill. For example, we are over payroll and need someone to go home to help bring this down. Someone with the Transactional Leadership trait would look for someone who would save the company the most money and look to schedule them on a day next week that might be outside of their normal shift time. If I were in this situation, I would start by asking who would like to go home first, and then moving to sending people home, who had been there the longest throughout the day. The last reason I consider this a weakness is because I have not had the experience as other leaders who might consider this a strength. Leaders who excel at transactional leadership learn this through years of experience and mentorship with other leaders. Leaders learn how to appeal to team members to allow for not only the team member to feel what they are doing is beneficial for them, but also to have team members want to benefit the leader’s goal as well. I
Running Head: Personal Leadership Evaluation 9 have extraordinarily little leadership experience, I admittedly do not know how to make those conversations, and this is one of the main reasons this scholarly leadership theory was one of my top weaknesses. Action Items One action item to improve my leadership weakness, will be to gain more experience, this can be by working in a direct leadership position, or working to take leadership roles within small projects. One of my biggest weaknesses is my lack of experience in leadership roles. I have knowledge of what it takes to be a leader but have not been able to apply that knowledge into the everyday workplace. As Elbert Einstein said, “Information is not knowledge. The only source of knowledge is experience. You need experience to gain Wisdom” Another action item to improve my leadership skills would be to collaborate with an experienced leader to learn how to make better analytical experiences. This is important because it not only works on a weakness but working with someone who has been in the trenches and gives real world examples. Lastly, the last action item to improve my leadership skills would be to supplement my classes here at Western Governors University (WGU) with conferences and other direct learning opportunities to improve my skills. I would use these experiences to improve my confidence, analytical skills, and other weaknesses. I think a combination of these action items and finishing my degree here at WGU will help grow some of my weaknesses into strengths. S.M.A.R.T Goals

Running Head: Personal Leadership Evaluation 10 SMART goals are specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and time bound. By having SMART goals, it will allow me to achieve all my goals that I may have in the future. My first specific SMART goal is to obtain my MBA in Healthcare Management. This goal is particularly important so it can allow me to have multiple job opportunities. I will measure this goal by seeing how many courses I have completed within each term of every six months. This will be achievable by having a set schedule for completing my courses and meeting with my mentor to guide me through any issues I may have. My goal is realistic because my goals are measurable, and I can achieve them by following my plans. I plan to complete my MBA in Healthcare Management by May 2024, or by the end of my third term. My second specific SMART goal is to obtain a Healthcare Management job at one of the bigger hospitals in my state where management has room for growth. This goal will be measurable by the number of applications that I am able to fulfill and the number of call backs I am able to receive. My goal will be achievable by completing my MBA and applying to positions that match my background. This goal is realistic because I plan to complete my MBA and I have healthcare experience. I plan to achieve this goal by December 2024. Actions to Achieve S.M.A.R.T. Goals Some actions that I may take that will help me achieve my smart goals include having a good support system that will help me through challenging times when it comes to my courses and achieving my goal of my MBA. Another action that I may take to achieve my smart goals include having some background knowledge and informing myself of what the company is looking for in their Healthcare management position so that I have a better chance of getting my dream job.
