To forecast the future demand for online courses, Athabasca University (AU) has asked you to contribute to a scenario planning exercise (see Lesson 5) to assess the following question: “Will enrollment in online courses at AU increase or decrease over
the next five years?” To begin, AU wants you to provide one sample scenario that could impact enrollment over the next five years for each of the five factors listed below (see textbook, pp. 62–72). Explain how your examples might increase or decrease enrollment.
political/legislative factor
economic/competitive factor
social factor
technological factor
demographic factor
Next, AU asks you to choose the two factors that you think will have the greatest impact on enrollment in online courses over the next five years. For each of your two chosen factors, identify both the best-case and worst-case scenarios that could occur.
Once identified, uniquely combine the best- and worst-case scenarios into the four possible combinations (see textbook, pp. 119–120). For each of the four combinations
you present, briefly explain the projected impact on online course enrollment and how Athabasca University’s human capital needs would need to change or adapt to fit the scenario.
