Purpose of Opportunity The purpose of this opportunity is so that the Project Management Professional certification can assist with proving that project managers are qualified to manage projects successfully. The Project Management Professional (PMP) certification represents project managers that are selected as an elite group. It proves that they have the project leadership expertise and experience necessary to complete the job (PMI, N.D). The industries that use PMP are construction, finance, information technology, energy, and healthcare (Spoto, 2021). This certification is globally recognized around the world by project management professionals (Galarita et al., 2023).
Funds Requested
It is required to pay for a fee to obtain a Project Management Professional (PMP) certification. If you are a member the fee costs $405 and for a non-member fee it is $575
(PMI, N.D.). Nonfinancial Requirements
Prior to applying for the PMP Certification, you must meet one of these requirements:
“Four-Year Degree
36 months of experience leading projects within the past eight years
35 hours of project management education/training or CAPM
®
certification
High School Diploma or Associates Degree
60 months of experience leading projects within the past eight years
35 hours of project management education/training or CAPM
®
certification”

Once your certification expires you will have to renew it. To continue your PMP
certification you must “earn at least 60 professional development units (PDUs) within
the three-year cycle” (Belding, 2021). You will need to continue to update your CCR
every 3 years from the date that you pass your certification. However, if you don’t the
credential will be suspended and eventually be expired. In order to maintain your PDU
by education you must complete this by attending classroom or online courses, digital
media or online, informal learning, organization meetings for a maximum of two PDU,
self-reading or reading PM Books/Blogs/Articles. Other ways are to give presentations,
work as a practitioner in your certified role for a maximum of 8 PDU, creating new
sources of knowledge, sharing your knowledge by teaching, mentoring or applying
knowledge, or volunteer for a not-for profit, such as PMI (Belding, 2021). Professional Benefits
The professional benefits of being a PMP are that it adds value by dedicating yourself to
excellence, demonstrating that you have the specific skills that employers are seeking, and the capacity to perform at the highest levels. “The median salary for project professionals is 16% higher globally (and 32% higher in the United States) than those without it” (PMI, N.D.). The types of jobs that you can apply to are project coordinator, portfolio and program manager, project director, product owner, project manager consultant, and engineering project manager (Indeed Editoral Team, 2023).

The benefits that a project manager can bring to an organization is by improving productivity, collaboration, customer satisfaction, and performance. It assists with problem resolution and it reduces the costs and the workload (Pandey, 2022). PMP indicates that you can positively impact your organization in the office and around the world. It also shows that you have the skills to drive the companies results (PMI, N.D.).
