For my assignment, I chose the job “Electrical Appliance Assembler”. Firstly, I accessed the Canada NOC website to research the position and find all the job classifications. To have an adequate job description I then went to Indeed to compare multiple positions currently offered in the workforce from many employers all over Ontario therefore completing my own job analysis. Once I had the knowledge and understanding of the different job descriptions on Indeed for similar positions, I then compared those to the job description given on the Canada NOC website. The Canada NOC website job description is broad in scope, so I decided to include in my description the reporting relationship for the employee and cut down the information to be specific to the position I chose. In defining the position for the job description, I followed the outlined example on the Canada NOC website ensuring to include job duties and employment requirements, which I found matched up with many I had seen on Indeed. I decided that what was important to include for my job description were all the points listed on the Government of Canada website included in our assignment “Setting up a pay system” under “Step 1: Defining the positions”. 3 When deciding the pay range for the position, I looked up the wages on the Government of Canada Job Bank. 4 For most of Ontario, the median pay is $21 an hour. This was all cohesive with what I saw on Indeed for similar positions with prior experience in the field, so I felt it was accurate. Once I had decided on the median pay, I then calculated 85% and 115% of the median to give a minimum and maximum pay range for the position. I did this calculation based on the Government of Canada pay range section of the “Setting up a pay system” report where it explains that having a pay scale like this can help new employees increase their earnings by 30% without a job change and employees can be provided performance incentives even if they have not yet been promoted. To help ease tension for 3 (2023, May 17). Setting up a pay system . Government of Canada. https://sbs-spe.feddevontario.canada.ca/setting- pay-system 4 (2023, September 19). Job Bank . current employees, I would suggest an annual wage increase until we reach the maximum wage on the pay scale. Outlining this in the reference tool I believe will help ensure fairness for all employees. As explained in the scenario for Assignment One, my company has an aging workforce, and this reference tool will help to promote equality for all employees new and old. For the employees who have had to take on additional breadth and scope to their work, or “job enlargement”, the pay scale can be a tool to help them receive an increase in wage that may, in turn, create more “job enrichment”. These are loyal employees who have spent years helping to grow the company and having a reference tool like the one above will make it easier for the Human Resources professional to ensure fairness among employees but will also help make the environment have a more team-like atmosphere. 4 | P a g e
