The Competing Values Framework (CVF) is used by companies because it has proven to be significantly valuable in both organizational and individual circumstances. Since it emerged from research 20 years ago, it has become the most cited and tested model for evaluating an organization’s effectiveness and fit into its environment. When using the CVF model to assess the US Fishing Boat Manufacturer, it is evident that the dominant culture is adhocracy, which supports innovation, creation, and vision. The values of this culture can be seen through the incentives given to employees in exchange for their creative ideas, through the design of a culture where founders and employees are considered equals, and through the decentralized structure that allows employees access to the founders at any time to for collaboration, shared decision making, or relationship building. This type of culture can be helpful to the company's entry market strategy because of its emphasis on innovation and creativity, as it will need to experiment with new materials and create a new design for the foldable boat. A2. 1.  The organizational structure of the US Fishing Boat Manufacturer is flat. A flat organizational structure has little to no middle management between employees and executives. This is evident within the scenario as it mentions that the founders are accessible to the employees at any time for shared decision-making, collaboration, and relationship- building, and all employees evaluate all company decisions to ensure equal commitment by all founders and employees. This can put the company at a disadvantage when entering the market in India, with the US Fishing Boat Manufacturer needing to hire Indian fishermen, and the decision-making processes, including all employees with the existing employees in the US, will impact the time frame in which a decision can be made. A3. 1. How does the company culture  impact the decision-making process at this US Fishing Boat Manufacturer? The US Boat Manufacturer has an adhocracy culture. Within the adhocracy culture, there is an emphasis on innovation. This is demonstrated within the US Fishing Boat Manufacturer
by the company providing incentives for creative ideas and the opportunity to test those ideas. This innovative culture can help create functional designs when entering the market in India. This will impact the third step of the decision-making process, generating ideas and options. 2. How does the organizational structure  impact the decision-making process at this US Fishing Boat Manufacturer? The organizational structure of the US Fishing Boat Manufacturer is flat. The Boat Manufacturer demonstrates the flat structure by the founders being accessible to all employees anytime for collaboration, shared decision-making, or relationship building. As well as all company decisions are evaluated by all employees. This can have an impact on the decision-making process as it will ensure that all employees are committed to adapting to the new materials and processes and entering the new market before moving forward. This can impact the sixth step in the decision-making process: implementing solutions. 3. How do the mission and vision statements (the strategic direction) impact the decision- making process at this US Fishing Boat Manufacturer? The US Fishing Boat Manufacturer aims to be the most innovative and sustainable company in the industry. The company hiring fishermen from within its target market to help design the foldable boat will offer key insights into what will best address the target market's needs. To reduce landfill waste, they will use recycled plastics to manufacture the foldable boats. This will impact the fourth step in the decision-making process because they will have to find a waterproof and environmentally friendly material and a design that meets their target market’s needs. B1. 1. Emerging market characteristic #1: The first characteristic of the emerging market is the laws and regulations to preserve the ecosystem in India have made mechanized boats illegal. This has created a favorable market for the foldable boats. Due to these preservation efforts, India is open to partnerships that improve the fishing experience of traditional fishermen. 2. Emerging market characteristic #2:  The second characteristic of the emerging market is the need to use plastic sourced from the nation’s landfills. With India’s focus on the ecosystem and the need to reduce product waste from the nation’s landfills. It will bring revenue into India as it requires the US Fishing Boat Manufacturer to make a significant investment into India.       B2. 1. Product design change based on emerging market characteristic #1:
With the laws and regulations in India that aim to preserve the ecosystem, they will need to design a nonmechanized boat that will benefit and meet the needs of the traditional fishermen within the target market. They will also need to consider and evaluate the environment in which the foldable boats will be used. They will need a boat design that is specifically suited for the needs of the fishermen and the environment of the emerging market. A boat design that fits the needs and environment of fishermen in the US may not meet the needs of the target market in India. 2. Product design change based on emerging market characteristic #2: A required design change is the materials that are used to manufacture the foldable boats. India is seeking to reduce waste materials from their landfills by using plastics from India. This change will impact the design process. They will need to consider the aspects of the new material during the design process. While ensuring that the foldable is environmentally friendly, they will also need to consider and ensure that the waterproof coating will be sturdy enough to withstand the impact of day-to-day use. B2a. 1. Step 1: To reach a solution, we must first understand the challenge and what the solution requires. It is important to understand the experiences and feelings of the consumers within the target market, which can be achieved through proper research and interviews with consumers. The hiring of fishermen within the target market to aid in the design of the boat by providing feedback and expressing the needs of the fishermen within the target market. The US Fishing Boat manufacturer has begun this step. 2. Step 2: Within the second step of the design thinking process, we will combine and analyze all the information learned in step one. By combining and analyzing the research and feedback from local fishermen, we can define what problems the consumers in the target market are facing. The US Fishing Boat Manufacturer will apply this when redesigning the foldable boat based on the specific needs of the consumer as well as the use of the new plastics that are sourced from India. 3. Step 3: The third step in the design thinking process is ideate, which is used to generate ideas for possible solutions to the problem that was defined through combining and analyzing the

information in the second step: define. The US Fishing Boat Manufacturer will use this step to utilize their innovative and creative culture to generate innovative ideas that have merit to being a solution to the problems, such as the use of new materials and the laws and regulations that aim to protect the ecosystem in India. 4. Step 4: The fourth step in the design thinking process is prototype. This is the step in which we build small-scale versions of the redesign ideas generated in the third step: ideate. The fourth step is when the US Fishing Boat Manufacturer will begin to build a prototype using the new materials and adding features based on the ideas generated in the third step. 5. Step 5: The fifth step in the design thinking process is testing. During this step, we can test the finished prototypes. The US Fishing Boat Manufacturer will test and evaluate the finished prototypes, making any necessary adjustments to ensure that all the necessary criteria are met. 6. Step 6: The sixth and final step in the design thinking process is implement. This step begins when the prototype has proven successful during the previous step: testing and production of the final product will begin. During this step, the US Fishing Boat Manufacturer will begin the production of the foldable boats using the information gained from the five previous steps of the design thinking process. This is also the step in which the manufacturer will have the local fishermen use the boats and seek feedback from them for suggestions as to any possible changes that might be needed. B2b.  Company culture Emerging Market Culture Company ethics Emerging market ethics Organizational structure Global legal systems 1. Aspect #1 - Which stages from Part B2a would be impacted? Company culture is the beliefs, values, behavior, and expectations that define and set the company apart from other companies within the competing market. The company culture within the scenario is adhocracy, which values and emphasizes innovation, creativity, and vision. This company culture can impact the first step in the design thinking process, as the US Fishing Boat Manufacturer will seek to hire local fishermen who fit the existing culture of innovation, creativity, and vision.
2. Aspect #2 – Which stages from Part B2a would be impacted? The organizational structure within the scenario is flat as there are few levels of management between the founders and employees. The US Fishing Boat manufacturer’s structure allows the employees access to the founders at anytime for collaboration, shared decision-making, or relationship building. This organizational structure can impact the third step: ideate in the design thinking process, as it has created an environment where collaboration between different levels/departments is encouraged. The collaboration between different levels/departments can result in more innovative ideas. 3. Aspect #3 – Which stages from Part B2a would be impacted?   The emerging market ethics within India, which aims to protect the ecosystem, has created laws and regulations favoring the use of nonmechanized boats. This will affect the sixth step: implement in the design thinking process. The US Fishing Boat Manufacturer will need to ensure that all criteria within the laws and regulations are met. C. Discuss in detail how the company’s ethical statement from the scenario influences the “market entry strategy” (Unit 4: Module 4). 1. The US Fishing Boat Manufacturer's ethics statement states they will make decisions that are both sustainable for the consumer and the environment. This ethics statement will aid the company’s entry into the emerging market in India, as NFDB promotes the use of natural fishing equipment that reduces disruption to the fishing ecosystem. The ethics of both the emerging market and the US Fishing Boat Manufacturer align as they both seek sustainability for the environment.     D. References Western Governors University. (n.d.).
