To prepare: Review the text chapter on ethics, paying close attention to the types of power described. Consult the NASW Code of Ethics. Review the following scenario and consider how you would respond: “You have been told that the People First San Diego organization needs to downsize considering the economic climate and that you will be losing some staff on your Therapy Services team. The executive director has told the leadership team that at this time, everyone should remain positive and say nothing to avoid a “panic situation.” Human Resources has concurred. One person who faces termination is Jerry, a young therapist who has just had his first child. Jerry comes to your office and shows you a real estate listing for a house he is going to make an offer on that afternoon. As you are chatting, Jerry says, “I wouldn’t be able to afford this without my salary. I’m good, right?” He laughs, not knowing anything about the impending layoffs. What do you do?” Assignment: 1. Compose a solution to the ethical scenario that draws on ethical leadership and the NASW Code of Ethics. 2. Provide four brief justification examples for your choices using a specific NASW ethical standard. 3. Explain the type of power you would utilize in achieving the solution. Provide citations and a reference list. Response: To propose a feasible answer to this ethical dilemma, I would look to ethical leadership and the NASW Code of Ethics for guidance. Since Jerry is in the dark about the forthcoming layoffs, I would make use of the authority that comes with my position to guarantee that I am behaving in the most ethical way possible. In accordance with the NASW Code of Ethics, I am required to uphold professional boundaries and to keep secret any information in my possession that, if disclosed, may put my client or a
member of their family in danger. As a result, I have no choice except to be forthright with Jerry and explain the possibility of layoffs. Because of this, he would be able to select about the property he wants to buy that is well informed. At the same time, I need to keep his mental health in mind and take measures to make sure he doesn't feel overburdened by all that's going on. To accomplish this goal, I would put my interpersonal skills to work by establishing a trusting and cordial relationship with Jerry. I would be sure to listen to his worries, affirm his feelings, and provide him emotional support whenever he needed it. In addition to that, I would provide him materials that he could utilize to assist him in making an educated choice about the home. In conclusion, I would make use of the expert authority I possess to offer Jerry with correct information on the possible layoffs. I would explain the issue to him in a straightforward but kind way, and I would present him with information on the procedure and the schedule for the layoffs. I would also make the offer to provide him with further resources and support if he found that to be necessary. I would be able to propose a feasible solution to this ethical dilemma if I used ethical leadership and adhered to the NASW Code of Ethics. During this challenging moment, my strategy would entail making use of the power that comes from Jerry's position, the power that comes from his relationships with other people, and the power that comes from his expertise.
