1 Ch 10: Case Study- Managing Risk Mary Claire Dale 1. What other information should Sergio collect before deciding what he will recommend? Sergio has already gathered that compensation claims were from back injuries and one case of rash from cleaning chemicals. He also mentions that workers are sick or cannot find childcare for their kids, and two workers have quit because of all of the extra hours. Now what he needs to find out is if the back injuries have received compensation, if they are in recovery, how it happened, how many have been affected, and what the company can do to correct this hazard in their workplace. He must also see when the workers put in their claims and if they are within the 8 hour or 24 hour hospitalization time frame. Randy should also look into changing the cleaning chemicals to ensure no one else gets rashes. Setting up a safety program would also be a smart decision. An OSHA Compliance Officer should be called on to investigate the injuries and inspect the workplace to assure the workers are working in a safe environment. However under OSHA employee rights, a worker is allowed to refuse to work in unsafe environments not because they cannot find childcare, so they should be replaced instead of compensating with so much overtime to cover them. 2. Other than labor costs, what are some potential negative consequences that may result if these problems are not addressed?
2 Some potential negative consequences that may result if these problems are not addressed could be worker stress which causes burnout, depression, high turnover rates, lower productivity, etc. Errors in medical care can also affect employees and their work performance, so it is imperative that they receive the proper care in a timely manner for their specific injury. Additionally, this can affect the work life balance that is so vital to the overall wellbeing of your employees. By withholding personal time during their work week, overworking employees even during a slow day, and not getting at least a 30 minute break when working seven hours or more, it would be no surprise that negative consequences would arise. 3. What are some options Sergio might recommend? Sergio might recommend developing an EAP to help employees cope with stress, alcoholism, or drug issues. Creating this program by ensuring confidentiality and managerial support is vital in its success. Another recommendation could be a wellness program that can help lower depression and stress by doing health screenings, exploring the benefits of physical fitness, and providing educational courses on alcohol and drug prevention. Sergio should also put up an MSDS sheet near the storage place of all chemicals used on the job. The safety program that should be implemented would also help encourage employees to be aware of safety issues and to undergo the proper training sessions to prevent injury, and to raise awareness of where there are potential safety threats. Workers that do not show up and are unaccounted for due to reasons not stated by
3 OSHA or company policy, should be released and replaced to alleviate the overtime strain on the other employees.
