When delivering a professional development, feedback from your audience is important for continuous improvement. Other than a satisfaction survey, provide 2-3 other methods that can be used to collect feedback. Having an honest and open conversation with staff about their professional development is one method administrators can use to collect feedback from them. A safe and positive work environment that encourages the expression of concerns and needs is essential to getting accurate feedback. Verbal and direct feedback would not be effective without such an environment since many staff members might feel intimidated by administrators, thus avoiding giving honest feedback to them. My preferred method is to have a suggestion box in a designated, somewhat private area where staff can use it for feedback. The staff could fill out tiny slips, without mentioning names, and drop them in the box. These should be checked periodically and suggestions should be shared aloud during staff meetings to remain as an effective tool. It also fosters a sense of accountability, community, and belonging for staff. Thirdly, I suggest using exit slips after professional development sessions to elicit feedback from staff for continual improvement. “A Gallup study of 469 business units found that managers who received feedback on their strengths showed 8.9% greater profitability post- intervention. The trick, however, is to ensure you're getting honest feedback. Sometimes employees are afraid to criticize their manager or the company for fear of repercussions. Changing this perception – or better yet, preventing it from forming in the first place – requires building a culture of trust and transparency where all types of constructive feedback are encouraged, no matter the source” (Forbes Coaches Council, 2017).
