Course Code: D078 - Task 1 Student Name:  Charlene Waters Student ID: 010319170 Date:  1/14/2023 Program Mentor Name: Ron Cimo A.  1. Based upon the consulting business example, I would choose to use the team structure for our organizational structure. The team organizational structure works best for a business that is composed of multiple individuals with complementary skills that are collaborating to achieve a shared goal. In this scenario, having a team structure will allow our employees to be highly collaborative and creative to meet the customers’ consulting needs, and therefore further our progress on our mission of building sustainability in the community. 2.  •   functions or departments While my consulting business would still be a small, startup operation, each of our roles would most likely need to be very diverse in scope. As the company grows, it would be feasible to have the company start to divide into departments based upon the functions of the job performed, such as finance, HR, direct consultants, et cetera. In the beginning, having the team's organizational structure will benefit the organization by allowing the interns to work together closely and to collaborate. This collaboration among the employees will help increase our team’s creativity. •   chain of command The chain of command of our team will be myself as the manager with the interns reporting directly to me. As the team grows with hires later on down the road, the interns may have graduated school by then, and one or two may have worked hard to distinguish themselves from the others. These would be the people I would choose to be the leaders of the organization. The newer hires would report to those leaders, who would report to me. •   centralized or decentralized With such a highly collaborative environment that thrives on creativity, I think that having a decentralized structure will help to cultivate my future leaders within the organization. A decentralized structure gives employees the authority to make routine decisions within the scope of their role. I think that my employees will be able to thrive within an environment that allows them the freedom and responsibility this structure will provide. This freedom and responsibility will also help my better employees to stand out among the rest, which will be how I select my future leaders of the company. •   level of formality I would establish the level of formality of our consulting firm to be relatively informal. As an Accounting student, I currently work in an office as an Administrator with a very formal environment. This type of environment provides a very comfortable feel and is very welcoming for new employees. I would like to bring the best parts of the atmosphere that I enjoy now into this consulting business. I think having all levels of the organization be on a first-
name basis with one another and a standard open-door office structure would allow my interns to be the happiest within our setting. B. Modern organizational theory is good for use within a team environment, which is my selected organizational structure. This structure emphasizes flexibility and adaptation. This organizational theory will be used to support the team organizational structure by focusing on keeping an equilibrium within the organization as things will inevitably go wrong. Our decentralized structure with low office formality will also go well with the modern organizational theory because these things will all lead to high amounts of creativity, collaboration, and a sense of professional independence among the employees within my firm. All those things will make the firm be able to strategically maneuver and quickly change course when the need to find a better way to perform a task or handle a situation inevitably comes up. C.  1.  Using the team organizational structure will have a clear advantage when assessing the organization’s effectiveness as determined by the goal-approach model of organizational effectiveness. The goal-approach model of assessing organizational effectiveness ties the achievement of strategic goals with measuring the overall effectiveness of the organization. Since our consulting firm has clearly defined goals for the coming years, it will be easy to set our short- and long-term SMART goals based on these.  Achieving these key organizational goals will improve the company by helping to increase and improve employee’s and manager’s performance, innovation within the company, as well as productivity and profitability of the company. Keeping measure of our organizational effectiveness using short- and long-term goals will help us keep ourselves focused on furthering our mission statement, as well. The team approach will allow us to leverage all our employee’s diverse backgrounds and skill sets to increase creativity and productivity, which will help us to meet and hopefully exceed our goals in all of those categories. This highly collaborative environment will ensure that as each person is fulfilling their daily duties, they are all collaborating to fulfill our company’s bigger mission also. 2.  Another organizational structure that was not selected for my consulting business that exists is the functional organizational structure. This structure helps to divide a ]company into smaller groups of jobs that are all performing the same tasks, such as finance, human resources, or marketing. A disadvantage of this organizational structure would be that since there would be so few employees within the company, basically each department would just be one person, or one person may be trying to run two departments. This would drastically cut back on the collaboration between employees, which means that if one person is struggling with completing a task, there is most likely no one who will help to get that task done, leading to unmet organizational goals. A functional organizational structure would probably increase the time it takes to react to our customer’s needs, because there will be more division between each employee. While this structure would work for a larger organization, it most likely would not work well as the organizational structure for such a small startup business with so few employees, such as our consulting firm. Since our organization’s goal is to be innovative, I think that this organizational structure will directly work against achieving our strategic goals.
