Report
Compensation and Benefits (MGMT 3048) Group Project - Marking Guidelines for Written Proposal Report Component Details Weight Executive Summary Which managerial strategy you have chosen and why Summarize your compensation and reward strategy Summarize your findings in regards to your market survey (of published compensation data) Note:  Write this section last, after you have completed the other sections. It's a summary of some of the material in your report. This isn’t like a normal exec sum, which summarizes key points from all sections of the report. Instead, focus on summarizing the three themes indicated above (length: about .75 to 1 page) /10 Section 1:Company Analysis Using the five main contextual variables (environment, strategy, technology, size, nature of workforce) to determine which Managerial Strategy would be most effective for this firm. Note: Approximately 1.5 - 2 pages in length. Recommend a managerial strategy and justify it with an analysis of the five contextual variables. You should have already done this in your meeting minutes assignment, but if you didn’t provide a detailed analysis of the contextual variables in your meeting minutes assignment, you’ll want to do it here. /10 Section 2:Compensation strategy formulation - using the five-step compensation strategy formulation process (Figure 6.1) and summarize it using the Compensation Strategy template (Figure 6.2) Give your rationale for each element of the strategy – justify your recommendations! (each section worth 5 marks) Define the required behaviour (membership behaviour, task behavior and/or citizenship behavior) Define the Role of Rewards and Compensation (intrinsic vs. extrinsic rewards) Determine the Compensation Mix (Base pay, performance pay, indirect pay) and complete the Compensation Strategy Template Determine the Compensation Level (Lag, lead or match the market) How would you evaluate the Proposed Strategy? (affordability, legality, and employee attraction) Note:  Follow along with Chapter 6 as you complete this section. (Required behaviour about .5 page; Role of rewards about .5 page; compensation mix - about 2-3 pages; lag/lead/match explanation – 1 paragraph; evaluation of strategy - 1 long paragraph or 3 short paragraphs). You need also to complete the compensation template (there's an example in the textbook– Figure 6.2) - you can embed this in the body of the report or put it in an appendix and refer the reader to see the appendix to view the template. The idea behind the 5 pages for the compensation mix is that we want you to justify what compensation options/components you’re recommending, and why you aren't recommending other potential compensation options (e.g., why goal /25
sharing but not gain sharing, etc). Your explanations should make sense, given the managerial strategy you are recommending. On the compensation template, you’re providing a percentage breakdown of compensation by each component and sub-components of the mix. I’m not going to get too finicky when marking these; for example, either a 75/15/10 mix or a 70/15/15 mix are fine AS LONG AS THESE PROPORTIONS ARE CONSISTENT WITH THE MANAGERIAL STRATEGY (e.g., if you recommend classical with no performance pay and minimal benefits, the mix should look something like 85/0/15, not 70/10/20). Note that I also want the breakdown within each component too (e.g., break the indirect pay into proportions for each type of benefit). Also, on the compensation template, indicate whether you are matching/leading/lagging the market; if lagging or leading, indicate the % below/above average market compensation that you'll be lagging or leading. See the textbook for an example. Section 3: Evaluation of the Market Complete a market survey for all the positions at Fit Stop LTD. (summarize compensation data from published third-party sources) using four different web sources. To help you do this, assume that Susan Superfit will open her first store in Toronto. NOTE:  Pick each position one by one and visit some websites that contain summarized compensation data. We visit these sites during chapter 9 and there are resources on FOL (Market Survey Data Websites’ links in Assignment Resources and Links) to help you navigate some of these sites. Collect summary compensation data for one of the positions. Do NOT collect data from individual job advertisements/postings online (because that's only one data point). We're looking for summarized third-party compensation data. This can go into a table (about 2 .5 page). Remember, when reporting data, average and median wages are NOT the same thing, so distinguish them in your table. If you want, you can put this table in an Appendix, but summarize it in the main body of your report too. /25 Comment on the information you gathered from the market survey (third-party) information gathered. Do the results reinforce your recommended Managerial Strategy? Note:  Using a few sentences for each source you visit in section b, write some comments about how accurate, relevant, complete, timely, reliable you think the external compensation summary data is. There are not very many marks allocated to this part of the section, but I want you to comment on the compensation summary data you collect and compare them to the current compensation data from the case information (or what salary do you suggest for these positions like an average/median from four data sources etc.), and reflect on how these external numbers “fit” or “don’t fit” with your proposed strategy. (For example, what if you want to lag the market and your current pay is more than what the market currently pays? Comment.). One paragraph is sufficient for this part of the /5
section. Section 4:Recommendations for Other Structural Variables Provide three brief suggestions or recommendations concerning other structural variables (see ch. 2) in the organization, and explain why these recommendations would be consistent with the managerial strategy that you propose. Note: Regarding structural recommendations, refer to Chapter 2 for structural variables and come up with a brief recommendation for each one. Be concise here – there’s no need to give me textbook definitions of things like technology (you’re citing the course textbook, so I know where you’re contextual variables and structural variables are sourced). It would be helpful to clearly indicate WHY each of your structural recommendations fits with the managerial strategy (why the recommendation 'makes sense'). /10 Format of Report General Format of Report including: Cover page, Table of Contents Format/outline including headings/subheadings and page numbers Logical flow of information Note : I have no preference regarding font/margins. My page length guidelines are based on 11 point font, 1” margins, double spacing. Please use sentences and paragraphs, not bullet points. /5 Referencing and Research Level of Research including number of references and sources utilized (5 marks and attention given to proper use of APA formatting for citations (5 marks) Note: I don’t expect you to do external research, but I expect you to include references for the sources you used for Section 3, as well as the textbook. Note also that 5 marks are allocated to proper APA referencing - this includes proper formatting of end-of-report references as well as appropriate and proper formatting of APA in-text citations. For example, when you summarize your market survey research for section 3, I want to be able to understand exactly where each piece of data came from (properly cited in APA format). /10 Mechanics Grading for grammar/spelling and mechanics throughout this report will be as follows:  o A deduction of 0.5 marks per error (to a maximum of 5 marks) TOTAL Late proposals will be penalized 20% per day to a maximum of four days. /100
