Hello Class, Explain how and when you would use directing, coaching, supporting, and delegating leadership styles to create high performing leadership teams for your organization.
Leadership styles play a crucial role in shaping the dynamics of a team and achieving high performance. The situational leadership model, developed by Hersey and Blanchard, identifies four leadership styles: directing, coaching, supporting, and delegating (Northouse, 2022) that will be dissected further in my analysis. The directing leadership style is best employed when team members are inexperienced or lack the essential skills for a given task. I would use this approach in the early stages of a project or when forming a new team, as it provides clear instructions and guidance to individuals who may be navigating unfamiliar territory (Oedekoven, 2018). Using clear instructions, closely monitor progress, and providing immediate feedback would be imperative for communicating expectations and goals in a clear and transparent manner. These actions would help ensure all team members are aligned toward team objectives.
The coaching leadership style would be applied when team members possess some experience but still require guidance and support. This approach is particularly suitable for skill development and confidence building within the team. It would be imperative for me to engage in open communication and offer constructive feedback to foster an environment of improvement. Encouraging team members to take initiative and providing guidance on identifying strengths and areas for enhancement are crucial aspects of this style (Oedekoven, 2018). By actively participating in growth and development of my team members, I am confident
I would create an environment that promotes continuous improvement and self-assurance.
The supporting leadership style is applied when team members exhibit experience and competence but could benefit from encouragement and recognition. This approach would be useful for me to maintain motivation and a positive work environment amongst my team. To achieve this, I would acknowledge and praise achievements, encourage autonomy among team members, and provide support as needed.
The delegating leadership style is best employed when team members demonstrate a high level of skill and self-sufficiency. This approach facilitates maximum autonomy and independence within the team (Oedekoven, 2018). I would assign responsibilities and tasks based on each team
member's expertise, allowing them to leverage their individual strengths when using this leadership style. I would avoid micromanaging as this creates trust among the team to handle their responsibilities. In this style I would also complete regular check-ins to ensure consistent progress, address any challenges that may arise, and maintain open lines of communication. References:
